Course Description:

In this course, students examine the issues of online threats, which have risen dramatically in the last decade, and explore personal and professional strategies to reduce vulnerabilities.

Essential Objectives:

1. Define and discuss the history of information security, including key security concepts and components of information systems.
2. Describe the types of threats and attacks on information that impact quality of services, including trespass, malware, forces of nature, sabotage, activism, hardware failures, obsolesces, human error, social engineering, and theft.
3. Analyze legal, ethical, and professional issues in information security including national and professional organizational standards and policies.
4. Describe risk management and identify behaviors, categorize assets, and prioritize threats and vulnerabilities in personal and professional life.
5. Create and present a personal information security and maintenance plan.

Additional Instructor Pre-Assignments/Notes/Comments:

This is a flex course. Students work at their own pace to complete the course. I will check in regularly each week to answer questions. There will be Zoom sessions scheduled in the course as needed for check-in or material discussion.

Methods:

  • Lecture notes posted each module for the module's topic.
  • Discussion question each module focusing on an aspect of the topic for the module.
  • Outside readings to highlight current aspects of the material.
  • A quiz and written assignment to reinforce the material.

Evaluation criteria include

  • Demonstrate your learning forum responses- 20%
  • Weekly Quizzes- 20%
  • Weekly assignments- 40%
  • Personal information and security and maintenance plan- 20%

Since this is an online course, attendance and class participation will be measured differently. For attendance, you will need to post one note in our Canvas course each week- from Tuesday morning to Monday evening of the following week. Note that the participation requirement is different from the attendance requirement. See the syllabus for more information.
