Course Description

This course provides an overview of social work methods with an emphasis on case management services. Students use observational, problem-solving, recording, and relationship-building skills to explore topics such as the history and development of the social service profession, the nature of social work practice, the interface between individuals and the environment, and ethical dilemmas inherent in case management, including needs and issues related to developmental and physical disabilities, socioeconomic status, education, substance abuse, and family violence.

Essential Objectives

1. Explore the history and development of social work practice and its central focus on the interface between individuals and environment.
2. Identify the role and responsibilities of a case manager and other professionals working in a social services environment.
3. Discuss holistic approaches for working with individuals, families, groups, and communities.
4. Practice relationship-building and communication strategies with service providers.
5. Demonstrate effective techniques for interviewing and relationship-building with clients.
6. Observe and record complex human behavior and events accurately and thoroughly for progress notes and report writing.
7. Practice the essential components of a successful case management, including intake, needs assessment, trauma-informed practice, individualized action plans, service planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
8. Explain how personal values and ethics influence working with clients and cases, as well as the ways in which implicit and explicit bias can impact professional decision-making and interactions.
9. Discuss practices that help diverse populations overcome barriers and encourage self-sufficiency in a variety of ways, including financial independence and cultural adaptation.
10. Explore practices that promote resiliency among clients, their families, and practitioners.

Course Requirements:

• Class Discussions weeks 1-6 (Cumulative) 20%
• Research Assignment #1 / Student Share 20%
• Class Discussions Weeks 8-13 (Cumulative) 20%
• Research Assignment #2 / Student Share 20%
• Final Exam 20%

Discussion board assignments are worth 15 points

Research Assignments - the research portion is worth 75 points and the student share portion is worth 25 points

The Final exam is worth 100 points

• Weekly grading criteria:
• 13-15-: For any work to receive a 13-15 it must clearly be exceptional or submit outstanding work. It must demonstrate keen insight and original thinking. It must not only demonstrate a full understanding of the topic or issues addressed, but it must also provide a critical analysis of these. In addition, a 13-15 grade reflects a student's ability to clearly and thoughtfully articulate their learning. This grade will also reflect that you have responded to any questions posted for further answering from the instructor or a fellow student included to prompt a chat to further explore a topic. You will not get full credit for the assignment if questions posted in the thread are not answered.
• 9-12 -: For any work to receive a 9-12, it must be good to excellent work. It must demonstrate strong originality, comprehension, critical thinking, and attention to detail. In addition, a 9-12 grade reflects a student's ability to clearly articulate their learning.
• 4-6 -: For any work to receive a 4-6 grade, it must meet the expectations of the assignment. It must demonstrate solid comprehension, critical thinking, and attention to detail. In addition, a 4-6 grade reflects a student's ability to adequately articulate their learning.
• 1-3 -: For any work to receive a 1-3 grade, it must marginally meet the expectations of the assignment. It demonstrates minimal comprehension, critical thinking, and attention to detail. In addition, a 1-3 grade may reflect a student's difficulty in articulating their learning.
• 0: Work that receives a 0 grade does not meet the expectations or objectives of the assignment. It demonstrates consistent problems with comprehension, organization, critical thinking, and supporting details. In addition, a 0 grade reflects a student's inability to articulate their learning. Students are strongly urged to discuss this grade with their instructor. A 0 grade will also include assignments not submitted by the due date.

Weekly Schedule

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

• In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
• Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
• Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.
