Course Description

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of the Spanish language and covers grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. It includes simple conversation, reading and writing exercises and provides an introduction to the arts and cultures of Spanish-speaking communities around the world.

Essential Objectives

1. Recognize and pronounce the basic sounds (phonemes) of the Spanish language, acknowledging diverse accents and dialects across Spanish-speaking communities.
2. Employ vocabulary and grammatical structures orally in the Spanish language to:
a) Communicate and solicit basic personal information while respecting diverse identities, including gender, nationality, and forms of self-identification.
b) Engage in interpersonal exchanges, such as introductions, greetings, requests, and purchases, being mindful of cultural norms and varying forms of communication in different communities. 
c) Identify personal and household articles, incorporating terminology used in various Spanish-speaking cultures.
d) Describe one’s residence, family, daily activities, interests, and personal likes and dislikes, recognizing diverse family structures, cultural traditions, and lifestyles.
e) Respond appropriately to simple statements and questions on selected topics.
3. Describe the geographical features, diverse cultural and artistic traditions, and elements of daily life (food, clothing, work, etc.) of different Spanish-speaking countries, emphasizing the variety and richness of these cultures and their contributions to global diversity.
4. Apply learned vocabulary and grammatical structures to writing simple sentences, notes and short letters.
5. Read simple prepared or authentic dialogues and narratives and answer questions about the content of the readings.

Methods

My teaching methods for online beginner Spanish are designed to create an engaging and interactive learning environment. I use a blend of multimedia resources, including videos, audio clips, and interactive exercises, to cater to different learning styles and keep lessons dynamic. Emphasis is placed on practical communication skills, with real-life scenarios and conversational practice integrated into each session. I utilize digital tools such as flashcards and language apps to reinforce vocabulary and grammar. Regular assessments and feedback ensure that students stay on track and feel supported throughout their learning journey. By fostering a supportive and interactive virtual classroom, I aim to make learning Spanish both enjoyable and effective for beginners. Weekly Schedule

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

• In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
• Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
• Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

You will actively contribute to class and group discussions both by asking and answering questions; it also means that you will willingly engage in online class activities and that you willalwaysuse the language of the course, i.e., Spanish.

Missing & Late Work Policy

Class Preparation:

• This is a 3-credit hour class.
• Plan on a minimum of 2 hours of homework and assignments per day.
• Late assignments will incur a penalty of 10% per day.
