Identify an idea, belief, or value that you learned as a child that came from the culture of your family, one that came from the culture of your community or neighborhood, one that came from your broader cultural or ethnic background, and/or one that came from your religious culture. Why is the ongoing discussion on culture important when thinking about child development?

Week 3: Emotional Development and Complex Trauma

Your weekly reading for this week is posted in Week 3

Create a lesson plan for a child between the ages of 3 – 8 years to help them in the area of emotional development. Use the template in Week 3 as a guide for what is expected to include in your lesson plan.

Knowing that children learn best through actively exploring their environment through play experiences, please consider making your lesson plan as playful as possible. What are children learning to support their emotional development through play? What is the adult’s role in the lesson plan and play experiences? The use of “Flash Cards” or large group teaching moments may not be the best choice to use in your lesson plan unless your research states what the child will be learning through these experiences. Use the Vermont Learning Standards and other child development assessment tools to choose an area of emotional development you would like to focus your lesson plan on. Then research playful ways children can challenge their current level of mastery in this area of development and make this your lesson plan.

Post an original submission to the discussion forum using research and references by Wednesday at 11:55pm and respond to 2 other submissions using research and citing your references by Sunday at 11:55pm.

You will need to use other resources besides the weekly reading to support your work and remember to cite resources with APA format. Use APA format to cite your resources.

What is “complex trauma”? How does trauma impact the child’s developing brain – socially, emotionally, physically, cognitively and with language? What is “resiliency” and how does this factor in to a child’s ability to heal from trauma? How can children heal from trauma?

Please refer to the General Guidelines for Written Assignments and the APA guide for proper citing of references. You will need to use other resources besides the weekly reading to support your work and remember to cite resources with APA format. Submit by Sunday at 11:55pm. A completed list will have at least ten different contacts (name of professional, agency they are connected to, phone number, address, etc) and will cover all areas of child development (social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and language) and age groups.

Also answer the following questions in 1-2 pages and submit the answers as well as the completed list for your assignment. (There is no video option for this week’s assignment.)

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

Each week you will need to complete the following:

  • Read the weekly lesson. The weekly lesson will be available every Sunday by 11:55pm until the following Sunday at 11:55pm.
  • Post in the weekly Discussion Forum by Wednesday at 11:55pm.
  • Respond to two other students’ posts in the Discussion Forum by the following Sunday at 11:55pm.
  • Complete the lesson assignments in each course lesson by the following Sunday at 11:55pm.

Missing & Late Work Policy

Extensions will be granted only in extenuating circumstances. Because the course content is delivered in weekly modules, short-term conditions such as illness or technical problems will not be considered to be extenuating. Students who know that they will not have course access for any given week should make arrangements with their instructor in advance to complete assignments and participation requirements prior to the absence.

Unless you have prior authorization from the instructor of this course, there are no opportunities for making up missed assignments or discussions. Due to the nature of the online format, you will be expected to hand in all assignments by their due date – Sundays of each week by 11:55pm.

This course does not offer extra credit work, bonus points, late submissions or extensions on assignments.

Accessibility Services for Students with Disabilities:

CCV strives to mitigate barriers to course access for students with documented disabilities. To request accommodations, please
  1. Provide disability documentation to the Accessibility Coordinator at your academic center. https://ccv.edu/discover-resources/students-with-disabilities/
  2. Request an appointment to meet with accessibility coordinator to discuss your request and create an accommodation plan.
  3. Once created, students will share the accommodation plan with faculty. Please note, faculty cannot make disability accommodations outside of this process.

Academic Integrity

CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
