Week 3: Infant/Toddler Emotional Development

Read:

Your weekly reading for this week is posted in the online module for Week 3

Discussion:

Create a lesson plan for a child between the ages of 0 and 36 months to help them in the area of emotional development. Use the template in Week 3 as a guide for what is expected to include in your lesson plan.

Knowing that children learn best through actively exploring their environment through play experiences, please consider making your lesson plan as playful as possible. What are children learning to support their emotional development through play? What is the adult’s role in the lesson plan and play experiences? The use of “Flash Cards” or large group teaching moments may not be the best choice to use in your lesson plan unless your research states what the child will be learning through these experiences. Use the ideas in the Center of Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning and the Vermont Learning Standards and other child development assessment tools to choose an area of emotional development you would like to focus your lesson plan on. Then research playful ways children can challenge their current level of mastery in this area of development and make this your lesson plan.

Post an original submission to the discussion forum using research and references by Wednesday at 11:55pm and respond to 2 other submissions using research and citing your references by Sunday at 11:55pm.

You will need to use other resources besides the weekly reading to support your work and remember to cite resources with APA format. Use APA format to cite your resources.

In a 1-3 page essay or a video presentation of yourself (no more than 5 minutes long), why is the emotional development of the young child the foundation for all other areas of development? How can adults support emotional development? How can the environment support emotional development?

Please refer to the General Guidelines for Written Assignments and the APA guide for proper citing of references. You will need to use other resources besides the weekly reading to support your work and remember to cite resources with APA format. Submit by Sunday at 11:55pm. After reflecting on your observation, ask yourself the following questions:

What did you learn about the child?

Which objectives and developmental steps seem to be reflected in the behavior?

Does the child show special interest, a particular learning style, temperament or a challenge?

How can I use this information as I interact with this child?

What questions can I pose to the child or what comments can I make to the child?

What materials can I provide?

How might I involve the family?

Week 9: Language Development and the Importance of Play

Read:

Your weekly reading for this week is posted in the online module for Week 9

Discussion:

After reading the article in Week 9 reading as well as other research you have done, respond to one of the following questions:

· When do you believe that children should begin to acquire language and literacy skills? Do you believe it is important to speak to children (babies) who are preverbal?

· What is the correct way to interact with books and other literacy materials? For example, how do you feel about babies sucking and chewing on books?

· Do you think parents should take on a “teaching” role when it comes to language and literacy skills?

· Do you prefer to read stories to children, tell stories, or sing songs? Why do you think that might be?

  • What is "emergent literacy" and how is this supported in an infant/toddler environment (at home or at a child care - choose one environment to focus on)?
  • What is the controversy with infant sign language? What do you think about the use of Infant sign?

Add to the research in your 2 responses to classmates.

You will need to use other resources besides the weekly reading to support your work and remember to cite resources with APA format.

Post an original submission to the discussion forum using research and references by Wednesday at 11:55pm and respond to 2 other submissions using research and citing your references by Sunday at 11:55pm.

The hypothetical audience for the information in your paper will be parents/caregivers, early care teachers/professionals to inform them on how young children learn best through play experiences. This topic is not cutting edge – there is a lot of evidence-based research out there to support these ideas, so be sure to use them in your research to add validity and reliability to your ideas about play.

Please refer to the General Guidelines for Written Assignments and the APA guide for proper citing of references. You will need to use other resources besides the weekly reading to support your work and remember to cite resources with APA format. Submit by Sunday at 11:55pm. Assignment:

Read the following vignette from the CSEFEL article in your weekly reading:

Marc is preparing dinner and his two children—Jack (3 years) and Jalen (11/2 years)—are playing with cars on the kitchen floor. Suddenly, Marc hears a bloodcurdling scream coming from Jack that quickly turns into sobs. Between sobs, Jack shows his dad his arm and slowly says, “He bit me.” Jalen has bitten Jack. Marc is frustrated. He doesn’t know what to do. Jalen

bites often. He bites his brother, other children on the playground, and children in his childcare class. Marc is not sure how to respond. He wonders if he should use “time out” as a consequence, but thinks that Jalen is just too young to understand the relationship between biting and a “time out.”

In a 1-3 page essay or submit a video presentation (no more than 5 min long), share a researched idea that you think would help Marc, Jack or Jalen. Please be sure to use specific language on how you would use effective communication with the parent, the toddler or the infant.

Please refer to the General Guidelines for Written Assignments and the APA guide for proper citing of references. You will need to use other resources besides the weekly reading to support your work and remember to cite resources with APA format. Submit by Sunday at 11:55pm. Week 14: Temperament and Evaluations

Read:

Your weekly reading for this week is posted in the online module for Week 14

Discussion:

Review the information about "temperament" in the weekly reading as well as researching more on your own. Participate in the "Reflective Exercise" and answer the questions in the exercise. In this week's discussion, describe what stood out to you in this experience that you would feel is important when considering the overall healthy development of the infant and toddler regarding "temperament". You may also want to consider how one's culture impacts one's temperament and how this can inform how we take care of infants and toddlers.

Post an original submission to the discussion forum using research and references by Wednesday at 11:55pm and respond to 2 other classmate's submissions using research and citing your references by Sunday at 11:55pm

Discussions are worth up to 10 points. (See “Grading Formula” and course rubric for details on points given for discussions.)

Course Evaluation assignment:

If 80% of the class completes the class evaluations by Wednesday at 11:55pm, every class member will receive 10 bonus points.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

Each week you will need to complete the following:

  • Read the weekly lesson. The weekly lesson will be available every Sunday by 11:55pm until the following Sunday at 11:55pm.
  • Post in the weekly Discussion Forum by Wednesday at 11:55pm.
  • Respond to two other students’ posts in the Discussion Forum by the following Sunday at 11:55pm.
  • Complete the lesson assignments in each course lesson by the following Sunday at 11:55pm.

Missing & Late Work Policy

Extensions will be granted only in extenuating circumstances. Because the course content is delivered in weekly modules, short-term conditions such as illness or technical problems will not be considered to be extenuating. Students who know that they will not have course access for any given week should make arrangements with their instructor in advance to complete assignments and participation requirements prior to the absence.

Unless you have prior authorization from the instructor of this course, there are no opportunities for making up missed assignments or discussions. Due to the nature of the online format, you will be expected to hand in all assignments by their due date – Sundays of each week by 11:55pm.

This course does not offer extra credit work, bonus points, late submissions or extensions on assignments.

Accessibility Services for Students with Disabilities:

CCV strives to mitigate barriers to course access for students with documented disabilities. To request accommodations, please
  1. Provide disability documentation to the Accessibility Coordinator at your academic center. https://ccv.edu/discover-resources/students-with-disabilities/
  2. Request an appointment to meet with accessibility coordinator to discuss your request and create an accommodation plan.
  3. Once created, students will share the accommodation plan with faculty. Please note, faculty cannot make disability accommodations outside of this process.

Academic Integrity

CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
