Course Description:

In this course, students will explore child development from conception through preadolescence. The course emphasizes physical, emotional, social, cognitive, behavioral, and communication development of the child. Topics include developmental theories, research, applications, and assessment tools.

Essential Objectives:

1. Discuss theories and research on child development from conception to preadolescence.
2. Describe and recognize the physical, emotional, social, cognitive, behavioral, and communication milestones of children from the pre-natal period through preadolescence.
3. Identify and use tools for developmental screening and assessment, including those relevant to temperament, learning style, and all developmental domains.
4. Understand the multiple influences on early development, including biological, genetic, environmental, cultural, familial, and adverse childhood experiences.
5. Describe physically and emotionally safe, healthy, and supportive environments for children from birth through preadolescence.
6. Demonstrate proficiency in understanding the scientific method and in interpreting and evaluating statistical and other quantitative data as it is applied to human behavior.

Class discussions, mini lectures, reading, research paper, reflection papers, movie, activities.

Evaluation Criteria:

Evaluation in this class is cumulative. You have the potential to earn 100 points for the class. 90 to 100 points is an A, 80-89 points is a B, 70-79 points is a C, 60-69 points is a D, anything below 60 points is an F.

Grading Criteria:

A+ through A-: For any work to receive an "A," it must clearly be exceptional or outstanding work. It must demonstrate keen insight and original thinking. It must not only demonstrate full understanding of the topic or issues addressed, but it must also provide a critical analysis of these. In addition, an "A" grade reflects a student's ability to clearly and thoughtfully articulate his or her learning.

B+ through B-: For any work to receive a "B," it must be good to excellent work. It must demonstrate strong originality, comprehension, critical thinking, and attention to detail. In addition, a "B" grade reflects a student's ability to clearly articulate his or her learning.

C+ through C-: For any work to receive a "C," it must meet the expectations of the assignment. It must demonstrate solid comprehension, critical thinking, and attention to detail. In addition, a "C" grade reflects a student's ability to adequately articulate his or her learning.

D+ through D-: For any work to receive a "D," it must marginally meet the expectations of the assignment. It demonstrates minimal comprehension, critical thinking, and attention to detail. In addition, a "D" grade may reflect a student's difficulty in articulating his or her learning.

F: Work that receives an "F" grade does not meet the expectations or objectives of the assignment. It demonstrates consistent problems with comprehension, organization, critical thinking, and supporting details. In addition, an "F" grade reflects a student's inability to articulate his or her learning. Students are strongly urged to discuss this grade with their instructor and advisor.

Attendance Policy:

Attendance Policy: Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential components of a student's success in college and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. Due to the accelerated nature of this course, missing more than 1 1/2 classes puts you at risk for a failing grade. There is room for one full class absence, or half an absence from two classes. Please contact the instructor via text if you are going to be absent.

Detailed Syllabus

ASSIGNMENT DETAILS:

Poster Presentation 7% of final grade – Due 11/25 (class #5)This project fulfills Essential Objective #5 (to describe physically and emotionally safe, healthy and supportive environments for children from birth through preadolescence). You will create a poster to present to the class (and hang in the CCV hallway) about enriching environments for children. You will choose an age group in class. Each person in class will cover a different age group. You must have pictures (with citation), a title at the top, facts in short paragraphs or bullet points, and citations/references. Your name will be on this presentation and it will hang in the hall for one week – it should look professional, be fully checked for spelling and grammar, and all words should be typed. The poster should be at least 11 x 17, but no larger than a typical poster board.

Child Study 15% of final grade – Due 12/2 (class #6)This project fulfills Essential Objective numbers one and two. This project will require at least three hours of focused observation of one child between the ages of newborn and eleven (but not over eleven). You may not observe your own child for this project. This may be done in a home or school or daycare setting. You must have parental consent and use a pseudonym for the child. You will document observations of this child and reflect on your observations in relation to the readings and the two essential objectives related to the assignment. Consider the following questions: What developmental stages is this child working on? What milestones have they met in each domain (physical, emotional, cognitive, social, behavioral and communication)? Apply at least one major psychological theory to your observations and comment on what the theorist would say about this child’s development. What questions might you have for his/her caregiver and parents? This is one means for you to document what you have learned in this course. 5 pages, APA citation. You can use your text as your source.

Domains Chart 10% of final grade – Due 12/5 (class #7)You will begin work on this chart right from the start – including the first comparison of major psychological stage theories of development. (see homework from week #1). You will build on this as we read further into the text to include physical, emotional, social, cognitive, behavioral and communication milestones. By 12/5, you will have read the whole book and incorporated your learning – in your own words – into this chart. Turn in a paper copy when asked for homework and keep a working digital copy to work on so your final product is done by the due date. We will check in about this every class, so bring it with you.

Final paper 15% of final grade – Due 12/9 (class #8)This is a formal research paper on a topic you choose from a list on the first or second day of class. It must be in APA format, 7 page minimum, typed, 12 point font, double spaced, regular margins. You must use references from the Hartness Library – they should be reliable sources. Do NOT use websites as sources. You will lose points on your paper if you use websites. Unless you have proven you are proficient at research papers in another class (gotten an A on a research paper), you must submit your paper to etutoring at least 7 days before it is due. That means you need to start work on it early. Because of the accelerated nature of this course, this is a crucial step in the process. You will also be required to complete an annotated bibliography, starting in week 3.

Attendance & Participation 18% of final grade Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential components of a student's success in college and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. You earn .5 point for showing up to class. The other 1.5 are awarded for full participation. You will be graded on balanced participation (shared air time). No cell phone, social media or non-class technology use during class time. Phones should be turned to silent and put away during class. Please arrive on time, stay for the entire class and actively participate in all classroom discussions and activities.

Class One: Introductions, Review the syllabus, questions, Using the Library, APA writing & Citations, What is a Theory, Scientific method, Bio-Psycho-Socio-Sexual-Spiritual models of human development, Developmental facts/myths, Life lines class exercise, What is your bias?

Homework due next class: Reach chapters 1 & 2. Take notes in your own words about concepts, vocabulary and new ideas. Create a chart comparing major psychological stage theories of development. Include Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg (look in chapter 4), and Bowlby (look in chapter 7). Include ages, names of stages, and an example of behavior you might see in a child in this stage of development. This is the beginning of a comparative chart that you will work on throughout our class. We will later include other aspects of development. TYPED, ON PAPER. Keep a digital copy so you can add to it. Choose your final paper topic. Decide who you are observing

Class Two:quiz on chapters 1 & 2, What is your final paper topic? Who are you observing?Check domains charts, Child developmental theorists, Bronfenbrenner, Prenatal life, Pregnancy, ACES, Homework due next class: Read chapters 3 & 4. Take notes in your own words. If you have time to read more, you should – next week’s reading is heavier, and assignments are going to be due sooner than you expect .Do your observation (make sure you have parental permission!) Start writing your Child Study paper. Add to your Domains Chart for prenatal and newborn development. Remember to use your own words.

Class Three: Quiz on chapters 3 & 4, Check Domains charts, Pregnancy, Childbirth, Newborns. Homework due next class: Read chapters 5, 6 & 7. Take notes in your own words. Start Annotated Bibliography for your final paper – 2 sources minimum. Add information to your Domains chart for infants and toddlers.

Class Four: Quiz on chapters 5, 6 & 7, Check Domains charts, Check Annotated Bibliographies, Infants & Toddlers, Brain Development Game. Homework due next class: Read chapters 8, 9 & 10. Add to your domain chart, Environmental Poster due next class.

Class Five: Quiz on chapters 8, 9 & 10, Poster presentations, Early Childhood. Homework due next class: Read chapters 11, 12 & 13, Child Study due next class. Add to your domain chart, Submit your final paper to etutoring.

Class Six: Quiz on chapters 11, 12 & 13, Collect Child Studies, Middle Childhood. Homework due next class: Domain charts due, Submit your final paper to etutoring.

Class Seven: Domain charts due - discussion, Special Issues, Catch up. Homework due next class:Final papers due? If you want your paper back on the last day, turn it in on class 8. If you just want the grade, but not the paper back (with my feedback) right away, you can turn it in on class 9. Keep in mind we also have the final exam and presentations due during class 9.

Class Eight:Final papers due? Final exam review (cumulative). Homework due next class: Final papers due, Study for final exam.

Class Nine Last class***Bring your reading notes and books to class***Final Exam, Final Presentations, A big sigh of relief because you made it!
