Course Description:

A survey of human growth and development throughout the life cycle including physical, cognitive, linguistic, ethical and psychosocial dimensions.

Essential Objectives:

1. Compare and contrast two major theories of developmental psychology.
2. Identify and discuss issues in human growth and development arising from differences in gender, race, and class.
3. Select one theory and discuss the major aspects of each stage of growth according to physical, cognitive, language, and social dimensions.
4. Explain how both environmental and genetic factors influence growth and development.
5. Apply the main concepts and principles of one developmental theory to the development of an individual.
6. Describe the process of empirical research (both cross-sectional and longitudinal) as it is commonly practiced by the developmental psychologist.
7. Distinguish between fact and opinion, recognize unstated assumptions, and evaluate arguments according to the quality of supporting evidence in the literature.

Methods:

There is NO TEXTBOOK for this class. Instead you will be watching videos and listening to audio stories.

Evaluation Criteria:

Don’t forget to use the assignment rubric.  It lists everything you need to get 100% on papers.  You can find the assignment rubric by clicking on course information at the top of the classroom (before the first week of class).

Attendance Policy:

To be marked as present for the week make a post on one of these two places:

* class discussion thread
* post your assignment

Due to life events that occur to many students over a semester (such as sickness, weddings, family illnesses) each student may have a module that can be used once a semester.  When you make your request for the grace module, no explanation is necessary.

For the grace module you can post your assignment late without any impact on your grade.  You will also get 100% for class discussion that module, even if you do not make any class discussion posts.

You can submit late and revised assignments to increase your score.  After submitting late or revised assignments, make sure to send me a classroom IM (by clicking my name or my picture) to let me know.   Otherwise I wil not know it is there.  4 points are deducted for each late assignment.

Are you someone who wants to get the best grade possible in class?  If so, you can make an unlimited amount of revisions on your papers to increase your score.


Late class discussion posts will not be accepted.  Think of it as going to an empty classroom and talking to yourself.  This is different than being present during a class discussion.

Syllabus:


For each module you will be making 2 class discussion posts and writing one paper.

Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
