Course Description

This course introduces students to math relevance in college and careers and is designed to strengthen a student's math literacy, problem solving, computational math, and fundamental algebra skills. During the semester, students engage in activities and assignments associated with a college-level math course, build foundational mathematical skills, utilize available online and other resources, and develop strategies and behaviors associated with successful college learning. Credits earned in this course do not apply to degree program completion.

Essential Objectives

1. Recognize and apply mathematical thinking in professional and personal contexts.
2. Utilize formulas, functions, graphs, and operations to effectively solve mathematical, algebraic, and geometric problems.
3. Meet college-level expectations through appropriate quality of work, time-management, decision-making, punctuality, attitude, and the balance of priorities.
4. Evaluate progress throughout the semester and make adjustments as needed with respect to educational and professional goals.
5. Explain, in both group and individual settings, the process for solving problems, including methods that were used and results that were achieved.
6. Utilize library and other open educational resources to access and explore topical information.
7. Explore the concept of critical thinking and demonstrate interpretation and analysis skills.
8. Develop and apply effective teamwork and communication skills in the college environment, including expressing ideas, asking questions, and seeking help.

Required Technology

More information on general computer and internet recommendations is available on the CCV computer recommendations Support page.

Please see CCV's Digital Equity Statement (pg. 45) to learn more about CCV's commitment to supporting all students access the technology they need to successfully finish their courses.

Required Textbooks and Resources

This course uses one or more textbooks/books/simulations.

Spring 2025 textbook details will be available on 2024-12-06. On that date a link will be available below that will take you to eCampus, CCV's bookstore. The information provided there will be specific to this class. Please see this page for more information regarding the purchase of textbooks/books.

The last day to use a Financial Aid Advance to purchase textbooks/books is the 3rd Tuesday of the semester. See your financial aid counselor at your academic center if you have any questions.

Methods

We will meet by zoom every Tuesday by zoom at 9am. During this time we will do some short lecturing, some practice and begin our weekly homework together. This time will support your success with the online practice you must do for the rest of the week. These classes are required and count for part of your grade and for attendence for the week.

This class unravels each week by following the course MODULE posted for the week. You should read each page. On each page are directions and resources that you might miss by going straight to the assignments only.

In this course, you will practice your skills mostly through an online application. The application is linked to an etext, for your resource. There are also help functions through the app. On the course modules, the pages will direct you to the specific skills you will be practicing and there will be more resources, like videos and reading that will help instruct you as needed. Since some people need review for some skills and other need more instruction, you will be able to use the level of resources that works for you. As long as you show you are proficient on the online application, you are being successful.

Evaluation Criteria

30% of your grade is based on online quizzes

30% of your grade is based on homework assignments

20% of your grade is based on exams

20% of your grade is based on attendence and participation of zoom classes

There is no penalty for late homework and quizzes if completed in two weeks, although staying on top of your skills in a timely manner is very important, especially so you don't become overwhelmed.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

You are required to attend zoom class, complete all assignments, quizzes and other parts of every module on time each week. If you do, you will be marked present for that week. You will receive points for attending class and participating, just as you would completing assignments.

You will be marked absent if you did not do most parts of the week. Please reach out to me if you are sick or have a reason for an absence. If you have missed a class without a reason, it's still important to reach out to me so we can make a plan for you catching up.

Every missed week should be completed before the following weeks, as skills build on each other.

Missing & Late Work Policy

It is important to attend the weekly zoom and stay on time with your assignments on your weekly modules. Math skills build on top of each other, so each week so you will see struggles if you fall behind. This is NOT a flex course. You do not have complete flexibility of your learning. Instead, each week, a new module is posted and all assignments are due that week.

Every week follows the same schedule.

  • Module posted Tuesday
  • Zoom meeting Tuesday 9am
  • All assignments due Monday midnight

Not attending class will result in some point loss on grade (expecially if you don't reach out to instructor about missing class).

Weekly ssignments and quizzes on mathlab will NOT be penalized for being late, as long as they are completed within two weeks, as I want your grade to reflect your math skills. Please do not use as a reason to fall behind. Catching up with one week (let alone more than one) will not be an easy task .

Accessibility Services for Students with Disabilities:

CCV strives to mitigate barriers to course access for students with documented disabilities. To request accommodations, please
  1. Provide disability documentation to the Accessibility Coordinator at your academic center. https://ccv.edu/discover-resources/students-with-disabilities/
  2. Request an appointment to meet with accessibility coordinator to discuss your request and create an accommodation plan.
  3. Once created, students will share the accommodation plan with faculty. Please note, faculty cannot make disability accommodations outside of this process.

Academic Integrity

CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
