Course Description:

This beginning course in algebra provides a foundation for further study of mathematics as well as for course work in many technical and scientific fields. Topics include algebraic laws, polynomials, exponents, linear equations, and factoring. Basic math skills are recommended. Credits earned in this course to not apply toward graduation.

Essential Objectives:

1. Perform operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of rational numbers.
2. Perform operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication of polynomials.
3. Evaluate algebraic expressions by substitution.
4. Explain and apply the commutative, associative and distributive laws.
5. Apply properties of exponents.
6. Solve linear equations and apply to the solution of word problems.
7. Graph linear equations and identify slope and intercepts.
8. Solve systems of linear equations both graphically and algebraically.
9. Factor non-prime trinomials, factor binomials that are the difference of squares, and remove common factors from polynomials.
10. Simplify radicals and use that skill to solve problems involving the Pythagorean theorem.
11. Apply these concepts and skills in solving problems that occur in various fields of study.
12. Use a scientific calculator to verify the numerical solutions of application problems.
