Course Description:

This course provides students with an opportunity to master basic mathematical concepts and processes. Topics include a complete study of arithmetic and elementary algebra: fractions, decimals, percentages, whole numbers, and integers; and the arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Credits earned in this course do not apply toward graduation.

Essential Objectives:

1. Perform operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and apply them to problems involving whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
2. Solve problems involving ratio, proportion, and percent.
3. Work interchangeably with fractions, decimals and percents.
4. Perform basic operations with integers (positive and negative numbers) and graph them on the number line.
5. Understand and apply concepts of area, perimeter, and volume.
6. Solve problems using both the metric and English systems of measure including conversions within and between the systems.
7. Define and use a variable.
8. Demonstrate an understanding of basic statistical concepts such as mean, mode, and median, and be able to read and interpret simple graphs, charts, and tables.
9. Apply these concepts and computational skills to solving problems that occur in various fields. The process will include estimating, setting up, solving, and appropriate rounding.

Course Description:  

In this interdisciplinary first-semester seminar, students make the transition to college-level academic culture. This seminar is designed to help students develop the learning skills and habits of success that will support them throughout their college experience and as they consider career pathways. Reading, writing, and discussion (both in class and online) are central to developing an understanding of academic and societal responsibility. Students will start by analyzing personal beliefs and styles of thinking and then begin to look at how others and society view core concepts such as power, dissent, alienation, oppression, and freedom.


Essential Objectives:

The successful student will be able to:

1. Interpret, analyze, and evaluate a text and its sources.

2. Demonstrate foundational information literacy, research skills, and academic honesty necessary for academic writing.

3. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills in both online and classroom settings.

4. Apply effective strategies for building new knowledge and skills through reflection on learning preferences, challenges, and goals.

5. Identify possible career goals and educational pathways.

6. Examine social issues through the lens of the individual and society.

7. Examine personal assumptions and biases, and ethical impacts of decision making and participation in society.

8. Consider issues from multiple perspectives and discuss, debate, and defend ideas with clarity and reason.

Instructor Objectives:  The instructor has five goals for herself this semester, to:

1. create and support a low-risk, collaborative, and challenging learning environment that encourages a variety of unique approaches to topics;

2. encourage students to professionally and effectively express ideas; 

3. connect course material and community via motivating lesson plans;

4. engage students in CCV culture through resources and activities.

5. help students develop independence and self-reliance.  

Required Texts and Materials:

The Dimensions Reader: Eighth Edition.  ISBN: 9781506696959  (There are older editions available, but you need the eighth edition.  New $41.39 plus shipping through the CCV “bookstore”.  You can rent the textbook, or buy used copies.  Ask at the front desk to see if they know of anyone who wants to sell their book.

We will be reading this community read during the fourth through eighth weeks of the semester.  You can borrow it from the library if you prefer.  There will be one copy on reserve at the front desk.  Used copies are available at Amazon for under $1.00 plus shipping.



Academic Concerns:  Student with concerns about any aspect of this course should seek resolution by talking with the instructor.  If no resolution is achieved, and if the student desires, s/he should seek guidance from an Academic Advisor to facilitate the process.  The instructor may involve Advisors in discussions with students.

Academic Honesty: CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from students. Academic dishonesty occurs whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not create.  Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously.  We will explore this topic a great deal in this class. 

Accommodations:  See your Academic Advisor if you have a documented LD, IEP, 504 or service plan.  Because of policies set by ADA, your Advisor must contact me with list of reasonable accommodations.  However, I’m happy to make adjustments to help students succeed.  If you want to record “lectures”, feel free to do so. Power Point presentations will be posted to the class portal, as will resources and links. 

Attendance:  Come on time; stay till the end.  Three absences result in automatic failure.  Tardies, long breaks and early departures are tracked.  Patterns of missed time constitute absence.  Students earn points for punctuality, attendance and active participation; see associated rubric in the class Moodle.

Cell Phone Use:  Turn phone off, or put it on silent mode.  Do not send or receive texts in class.  Check your phone during break.  Give front desk number to babysitters and SOs – (802) 786-6996.  Friends and family can call front desk in an emergency; a staff person will come get you. 

Handbook:  Read CCV Policies on the website:  Disruptive behavior breaks down community and is not tolerated.  This includes sleeping in class.  Per CCV policy, disruptive behavior results in removal from class.  Questions?  Please ask.

Homework:  Expect about four to six hours of homework per week.  If you spend more time on work, see me so we can figure out why.  We’ll do a lot of reading, thinking and reflecting.  Turn in work on time.  Don’t use unfinished work as an excuse to not come to class, but be aware that homework is often used to build larger projects in class.  No late work is accepted.  You must achieve an overall grade of 70% for this course to apply to graduation and transfer requirements.  If you are absent, assignments must still be turned in when they are due (in class or by start of class via email ), not when you get around to it.  Homework is always posted in Moodle right after class.  It will “turn off” after its due date.  

Learning and Career Center:  You may be referred to the LLC where you can work on an individual basis or in a small group with peer mentor or instructor.  Academic support is free.  You don’t need a referral to attend the LLC.  If you notice the same errors popping up in your work, get help sooner rather than later.  Please use the feedback provided to make improvements in your work.


Participation:  This is an interactive class.  Be an active listener.  Ask questions as they arise.  Contribute to discussions.  Treat others and their opinions with respect.  Expect to do paired activities as well as group work.  Be prepared; if you are not prepared, it hinders the progress of the whole class.

Quizzes and Exams:  Quizzes are not always announced, so always expect one.  Your lowest quiz grade is dropped; this may be a zero for a missed quiz.  I often begin class with a quick quiz; if you are habitually late, you will miss quizzes.  Unless you have an excused absence, there are no make-ups.


Students should expect to come prepared to discuss readings or work in small groups to create projects that reflect knowledge acquired outside of class.  There will be a discussion forum component in this class, and students will respond to questions posted and to classmates’ posts.  Many different forms of assessment will be used - minute papers, quizzes, written reflections, short essays, and small projects.

F = 0 – 59%,  D - = 60- 63%,  D = 64 – 66%,  D+ = 67 – 69%

C - = 70 – 73%, C = 74 – 76,  C +  = 77 – 79,  B- = 80 – 83,  B = 84 – 86,  B+ = 87 – 89, A- = 90 – 93,  A = 94 – 96, A+ = 97 – 100

I don’t grade on a curve.  Work is graded on its merits.   Your grades will be updated weekly and can be found at all times in the grades link in our class Moodle page.  Please check your grades regularly.  If you forget where to find your grades, please ask me or an LCC staff person to help you find them.




Attendance, Participation and Punctuality Rubric:

Three points for on-time arrival. One for late (by a few minutes) arrival.  Zero if you are more than ten minutes late.


Three points for substantive contributions to class discussion and activities.  Two for an active but not leadership role.  One for passive, non-disruptive observation.  Zero for disruption, disrespect or filibustering.  


Three points for leaving when break begins, returning when break ends, staying till end of class.  One point lost for any criteria not met.


One point for a proactive attitude.  


Earn a possible 10 points per class for 150 for semester
