Course Description

This course connects classroom learning to experience in a workplace or community setting. Students design a field study that meets their personal and degree program goals. The classroom component may include critical analysis and reflection on work, service to the community, the roles and responsibilities of citizens, and the relationship between learning and the field study. The course consists of at least 15 hours of class time and 80 hours in the field. Students must meet with an academic advisor and receive approval before enrolling in this class. Prerequisite: English Composition and a minimum of 30 prior college credits or advisor permission.

Essential Objectives

1. Clarify and reflect on personal career goals; examine the settings, challenges, and opportunities of various professions.
2. Design a learning contract that aligns field experience goals with the student’s program outcomes.
3. Demonstrate effective participation in a workplace or community setting (e.g., communication, teamwork, appropriate workplace ethics).
4. Apply program-specific learning and skills in a workplace setting.
5. Examine the ways in which an individual contributes to society through work and community engagement.
6. Describe how organizations impact the social, economic, and political systems in a community.
7. Evaluate the learning gained in the field experience through a process of reflection and supervisor feedback.
8. Develop important job search skills (e.g., resume and cover letter writing, researching employment opportunities, and interviewing) to support life-long career development.

The last day to use a Financial Aid Advance to purchase textbooks/books is the 3rd Tuesday of the semester. See your financial aid counselor at your academic center if you have any questions.


  1. Each student will perform a minimum of eighty (80) hours of individual field experience with a community business or organization during the spring semester.
  2. Each student will design/develop their own field experience and have their project approved by the instructor.
  3. Students will complete a current resume for employment (possibly more than one to address different job types).
  4. Every aspect of this course will be documented for your course portfolio which will be handed in at the end of the semester.
  5. A reflection journal will be maintained which details the field experience you perform. This journal shall contain the date, times, and a detailed description of the field experience you perform.
  6. A final three (3) to five (5) page report detailing your field experience will be due at the end of the semester. The report will include, but not be limited to the following:
  • Did this experience help you to achieve your goal (s)?
  • How did this field experience affect your knowledge about community agencies and community problems?
  • Did this experience provide you with opportunities for future development? If so, how?
  • Did this experience increase your skill in leadership, personal management, accountability, and responsibility? If so, explain.
  • How did your experience benefit the community?
  • What educational benefits did you achieve from this experience?
  • What was the one most significant thing that you learned or achieved from this experience?
  • Do you plan to pursue a career in the field you choose as your field experience? If not, why?
  • How do you feel this class and your field experience has prepared you for your future?
  1. Periodic reflection papers/other assignments as given.
  2. Documentation from your supervisor at the community service agency where you performed your field experience.
  3. It is your responsibility (with assistance from your instructor if needed) to make all arrangements for the successful completion of the individual community service-learning project.

Evaluation Criteria

10% - Homework (reflection assignments/journals)

20% - Attendance and Participation

40% - Successful completion of field experience

10% - Portfolio (to be discussed during pre-workshop)

20% - Final report

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Academic Integrity

CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
