Course Description

In this interdisciplinary first-semester seminar, students make the transition to college-level academic culture. This seminar is designed to help students develop the learning skills and habits of success that will support them throughout their college experience and as they consider career pathways. Reading, writing, and discussion are central to developing an understanding of academic and societal responsibility. Students critically examine the relationship between societal values, individual beliefs, ways of knowing, and cultural worldviews.

Essential Objectives

1. Interpret, analyze, and evaluate a text and its sources.
2. Demonstrate foundational information literacy, research skills, and academic honesty necessary for academic writing.
3. Demonstrate effective written communication skills, including active engagement in asynchronous online discussion.
4. Apply effective strategies for building new knowledge and skills through reflection on learning preferences, challenges, and goals.
5. Identify possible career goals and educational pathways.
6. Examine social issues through the lens of the individual and society.
7. Examine personal assumptions and biases, and ethical impacts of decision making and participation in society.
8. Consider issues from multiple perspectives and discuss, debate, and defend ideas with clarity and reason as part of a respectful learning community.

Weekly Schedule

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

• In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
• Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
• Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

• Attendance is based on students’ participation in class through the Canvas discussion forum or submission of the weekly reflection. If you do not participate in the weekly discussion forum or turn in work, you are considered absent for the week.
• Three absences may result in a failing grade.

  Discussion Forum

  The discussion forum is a vital component of the learning process. It is a chance for students to synthesize new material, respond to questions about topics and communicate with our fellow students. We cannot have a lively conversation if students do not participate, participate late or participate half-heartedly. For these reasons, students should craft thoughtful contributions and not wait until the last moment to post.

  How much are the discussion forums worth in the final grade?

  The weekly discussion forums are worth 25% of your final grade.

  What are the criteria for the weekly discussion forum?

  INITIAL POST: DUE NO LATER THAN THURSDAY NIGHT BY 11:59pm

  • Your initial post must beAT LEAST300 words long
  • In your post you must:
  • Use information from class content
  • Prove that you have completed the assigned readings
  • Synthesize information
  • Evaluate resources
  • Reference key concepts
  • Write an additional question based on the readings/material for the Discussion. A classmates will be choosing one of the questions posed by a fellow classmate for the second discussion posting.
  • I suggest that you craft your post in a document, spell check it and then paste it into Canvas. This way if there is a glitch in technology you will still have a copy of your work.
  • Share what you are comfortable in sharing but remember that your classmates will be reading your posts.
  • If you use a direct quote or paraphrase from a source, please cite it using MLA citation.
  • Check back after your reply to see if I or another student has replied and posted additional questions for you to answer.

  SECOND POSTING: DUE NO LATER THAN SUNDAY NIGHT BY 11:59pm

  • You must respond toAT LEASTone of your classmates’ questions.
  • Read all the posts from your classmates before you choose which to answer.
  • Your answer must be at least 100 words.

  Posts – late or missing

  • Your participation in discussion helps determine your attendance. It is imperative that you post each week. You will be counted absent if you do not contribute to the forum and do not hand in the weekly reflection.
  • If you miss a week you may NOT go back and post in a previous week. You will NOT receive credit if you go back.

Missing & Late Work Policy

Each week you will find a description of that week’s assignment. Often the weekly assignment includes a reflection paper (see reflection paper guidelines for details).

Weekly assignments are due Sunday by 11:59pm

Students will lose 5% per day that assignments are late (and I will only accept assignments up to one week after the due date).

I encourage you to not wait until the last day to work on your weekly assignment. These assignments are meant for you to show that you have completed the reading and synthesized the information. Rushed work often reflects a student’s inability to synthesize due to time restraints.
