Course Description:

Becoming highly effective, both personally and professionally, requires empathy, resilience, strong communication skills, and a dedication to proactive behaviors. This course explores these skills and illustrates ways to weave them into daily practice.

Essential Objectives:

1. Demonstrate empathic communication skills including active listening, building consensus, and meeting mutual goals.
2. Identify and value diverse cultural perspectives.
3. Demonstrate key characteristics of resilience and proactive behaviors in meeting challenges and finding solutions.
4. Develop and communicate a personal mission statement based on long-term goals and principles.
5. Demonstrate audience awareness through the application of diverse communication strategies.

Methods:

Aristotle said people are by nature social animals. We interact with others constantly, whether in our personal life or the workplace. Communication is vital to build effective relationships in both areas. In this course, you will learn techniques to improve your communication skills and to have more satisfying interactions with others.

We’ll be partnering with Education Design Lab to help you earn 21stCentury Skills Badges, specifically Empathy, Intercultural Fluency, Oral Communication, and Resilience.

This is a self-paced course. The only due date is that all work must be completed by the last day of the semester. The pattern for each module is: overview & objectives, lecture, readings/resources, demonstrate your learning (a discussion forum), assignment and/or assessment for the badges.

Module topics:

1. Empathy- Recognizing Others' Needs and Validating Their Feelings

2. Empathy- Incorporating Diverse Perspectives and Listening Actively

3. Intercultural Fluency- Showing Curiosity and Challenging Biases

4. Resilience- Practicing Self-Awareness by Learning from Experience

5. Resilience- Exhibit Flexibility and Be Solution-oriented

6. Oral Communication and Narrative
