Course Description:

This writing course introduces students to research methods across social science disciplines. Topics include various methodologies (e.g., interviewing, questionnaires, observation, literature search, data collection), presentation formats (e.g., written vs. oral), and APA documentation procedures. It also examines library and web-based research techniques. This course fulfills the research and writing intensive requirement. Students must complete a final research paper with a grade of C- or better in order to pass this course. Prerequisite: English Composition

Essential Objectives:

1. Demonstrate research methodologies commonly used in the social sciences, including formulating and narrowing research questions, observation, survey design, interviewing, and presentation skills (oral & written).
2. Compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative research methods used to study human behavior.
3. Demonstrate information literacy skills: distinguish between and utilize both primary and secondary sources; perform library and web-based literature searches; and evaluate data and resources for credibility, reliability and validity.
4. Identify and use key terminology related to research practices, including textual citations in APA styles.
5. Compose, revise, and edit a final paper that includes a thesis statement, integrates five or more scholarly and professional sources--including primary and secondary evidence as needed--to address an academic research question, and demonstrates writing proficiency by achieving a grade of C- or better.

Methods:

Through readings, discussions, and a number of projects (group and individual), the class will interact with a wide variety of research styles and studies. Grading will involve reaction writing, quizzes, several case studies, and several projects and presentations. Participation in all these activities is crucial to the student's learning.

*** A student must receive a 70 or better on this Research Paper and a cumulative average over 70 to pass the class.

Grading Criteria:

A+ through A-: For any work to receive an "A," it must clearly be exceptional or outstanding work. It must demonstrate keen insight and original thinking. It must not only demonstrate skill using the mechanics of English (spelling, punctuation, & grammar), but it must also provide a unique and organized view of the chosen topic, including research. In addition, an "A" grade reflects a student's ability to clearly and thoughtfully articulate his or her learning.

B+ through B-: For any work to receive a "B," it must be good to excellent work. It must demonstrate strong originality, comprehension, critical thinking, and attention to detail, as well as competency using English mechanics with minimal errors. In addition, a "B" grade reflects a student's ability to clearly articulate his or her learning.

C+ through C-: For any work to receive a "C," it must meet the expectations of the assignment. It must demonstrate solid comprehension, critical thinking, and attention to detail, as well as basic fluency in English mechanics without too many egregious errors. In addition, a "C" grade reflects a student's ability to adequately articulate his or her learning.

D+ through D-: For any work to receive a "D," it must marginally meet the expectations of the assignment. It demonstrates minimal comprehension, critical thinking, and attention to detail. In addition, a "D" grade may reflect a student's difficulty in articulating his or her learning.

F: Work that receives an "F" grade does not meet the expectations or objectives of the assignment. It demonstrates consistent problems with comprehension, organization, critical thinking, and supporting details. In addition, an "F" grade reflects a student's inability to articulate his or her learning. Students are strongly urged to discuss this grade with their instructor and advisor.

This is a hands-on, skills based course. Therefore it is important to attend every class and to be on time. Two absencesin the course is the limit without penalty toward your final grade, unless you have communicated with me from the beginning about an extraordinary problem.Three absenceswill lower your final grade by a letter.Four or more absenceswithout significant extenuating circumstances will result in a failing grade

If you’re late to class without significant extenuating circumstances, it is your responsibility to make sure that youweren'tcounted absent. Three late attendances will be counted as an absence.
