Course Description

This writing course introduces students to research methods across social science disciplines. Topics include various methodologies (e.g., interviewing, questionnaires, observation, literature search, data collection), presentation formats (e.g., written vs. oral), and APA style documentation procedures. It also examines library and web-based research techniques. This course fulfills the research and writing intensive requirement. Students must complete a final research paper with a grade of C- or better in order to pass this course. Prerequisite: English Composition


Essential Objectives

1. Demonstrate research methodologies commonly used in the social sciences, including formulating and narrowing research questions, observation, survey design, interviewing, and presentation skills (oral & written).
2. Compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative research methods used to study human behavior.
3. Demonstrate information literacy skills: distinguish between and utilize both primary and secondary sources; perform library and web-based literature searches; and evaluate data and resources for credibility, reliability, and validity.
4. Demonstrate the ability to apply APA citation style in academic writing by parenthetically citing sources in the text and correctly compiling them in the relevant end sources page.
5. Compose, revise, and edit a final paper that includes a thesis statement, integrates five or more scholarly and professional sources--including primary and secondary evidence as needed--to address an academic research question, and demonstrates writing proficiency by achieving a grade of C- or better.

Artificial Intelligence(AI) Policy Statement

CCV recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI tools are widely available and becoming embedded in many online writing and creative applications.

Prohibited: The use of generative AI is not allowed in this course, with the exception of spellcheck, grammar check and similar tools. This course rests in the value of students engaging in the learning process without relying on AI-generated content. Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills independently, owning their learning journey from start to finish. If you use these tools, your actions would be considered academically dishonest and a violation of CCV's Academic Integrity Policy.

I can understand why it might be tempting to use an artificial intelligence tool (like ChatGPT) to generate assignments in a college course like this one. It certainly does make things easier! The downside, however, is the fact it's just as easy to detect generative AI papers as it is to create them. I'm expecting you to do your own thinking in this course. So please avoid the temptation to submit an assignment you didn't compose by yourself.

Evaluation Criteria

• Determine a specific issue to study. Explain what your research

question is and why you are so interested in learning more about it =

10 pts.

• Locate published research studies that help you think about this

area of interest in new ways and justify your choices to me = 10 pts.

• Develop a method to study your research topic = 10 pts.

• Analyze your results and determine your conclusions = 10 pts.

• Prepare a focused summary of your research question, procedure,

results, and conclusions. This final paper is worth a maximum of 10

points.

In addition, you’ll receive a maximum of 5 pts. for completing related work during each of the ten weeks when one of these larger written assignments is not due = 50 pts.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Missing & Late Work Policy

All assignments must be completed and submitted on time and in sequence. I will deduct one point per day for assignments submitted late without prior arrangement. Grades will be based on completing each research task on time within specifications and, ultimately, upon the DEPTH of the knowledge base you develop about your area of research interest.
