Course Description:

This course provides high school and new students with the opportunity to explore the college experience within the context of their future career goals. Students reflect upon their strengths, interests, values, and goals by focusing on three key questions -- Who am I? What are the habits of effective people? What will I do after high school? -- and learn about the expectations necessary to succeed in academic and professional settings. In addition to the core curriculum, students will complete four or more modules on a variety of topics, such as time management, test taking, personal budgeting and communication skills. This course also provides students with an introduction to online learning, including an overview of the College's portal environment.

Essential Objectives:

1. Engage in self-discovery activities including short versus long-term goal setting, educational and career planning, and personal strengths and values.
2. Practice college and career success skills such as time management and prioritization, and develop strategies for reading textbooks and complex materials, note-taking, test-taking and using informational resources for research.
3. Develop strategies for making educational, career and financial decisions that align with personal goals and values and create a personal budget and money management plan.
4. Use online college resources to locate and request information and participate in an online learning environment.

Additional Instructor Pre-Assignments/Notes/Comments:

  • Assignments: part of going to college is learning how to manage your time and to keep up with reading and homework assignments. It is expected that you will hand in assignments on time in this course. No reflective learning summaries will be accepted late without prior approval. You will lose 5 points for every week that any assignment (other than reflective learning summaries) is overdue. If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to contact me in order to prepare your homework for the next class and to submit your homework due the day of your absence.
    • If you are going to be absent from class, you may turn in your assignments early at theMontpelier main desk, you may e-mail them to me as an attachment, or if applicable submit them via Moodle.
  • Participation: class participation is critical to being a successful college student. Participation in class discussion and small group activities is required.
  • Scholarly writing: Clearly express your ideas using: proper grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and abbreviations; appropriate citations in both text and reference.
    • All writing assignments are expected to be typed double spaced using 12pt Times New Roman font with 1” margins.
  • Academic: Academic dishonesty includes (but is not limited to): Plagiarism, which is defined as the presentation of the language, ideas, or thoughts of another person as one’s own work in the preparation of a paper, laboratory report, oral presentation, or any other presentation; dishonest conduct during quizzes, tests, or any other evaluative measures. Any student found to be dishonest in academic work may be subject to disciplinary action, which could include suspension or dismissal (Community College of Vermont Academic Honesty Policy, 2012).

Methods:

This class will include reading and research assignments, class participation and discussion, small-group activities, lectures, guest speakers, writing assignments and a final presentation.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Attendance and class participation = 320 points (8 weeks, 40 points/week: 5 points for attendance each week; 35 points total available for participation: 35 points for active and engaged participation, 15 points for adequate participation, 5 points for minimal participation, 0 points for no participation or any class disruption)
    • Attendance and participation are integral parts of this class. This means that you need to be present in body and spirit each week. Please arrive prepared with a writing instrument, paper, your binder and any completed coursework.
  • Academic Portfolio = 30 points
    • You will be required to maintain a three-ring binder to organize all of your notes, handouts and assignments. Your portfolio will be checked periodically.

  • Reflective Learning Summaries = 90 points (15 pts x 6 assignments)
    • Each week you will complete a reflective learning summary on the readings, discussions, and other activities completed during the week.
    • The reflective learning summary has three parts:
      1. Personal learning: this includes the major areas of content found in readings and discussions that have impacted your thinking for that week
      2. Questions and comments: this includes any questions/comments you have about the week’s topic
      3. Transformation: this includes determining how you will personally use the information
    • Reflective learning summaries are designed to allow you to provide evidence that you have actually thought about something related to the course. These statements are not graded but you will receive 10 points for each substantive reflection submitted on time. LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL. “Substantive” for this course can be defined twofold. First, the length should not be less than 200 words and not exceed 300 words. Second, substantive means clear and coherent contributions that demonstrate grasp of key concepts and may offer new interpretations.
    • Reflective learning summaries provide you the opportunity to raise questions with me or other students about course content.
  • Career Exploration Final Project and Presentation= 185 points (25 pts for the project proposal, 100 pts for the paper, 60 pts for the presentation)
    • You will write an 800-1000 word paper and do a short, 5-minute presentation to the class on a topic of your choosing during the last class meeting. This project is designed for you to explore an academic topic that you are interested in and passionate about.

Total Points: 625 points

Grading Criteria:

  • Introduction to College Studies is a Proficient/Not Yet Proficient course at a pre-college level:
    • Proficient (P): Indicates satisfactory completion of course objectives (C- or better). To achieve a grade of P, a student must acquire 438 (minimum) of the 625 total available points and demonstrate sufficient skills in all course objectives.
    • Not Yet Proficient (NP): Indicates failure to meet course objectives and /or failure to meet grading criteria set for the course. Students who receive less than437 total points or do not demonstrate sufficient skills in all course objectives will earn a grade of NP.
    • Although there is no official college credit assigned for completion of Introduction to College Studies, the course will reflect the time commitment and work load of a typical 2-credit college course. In addition, students often receive credit at their high school for completing ICS.
    • In addition to the official assigned grade of (P or NP), students will be made aware of the letter grade they would have received based on the grading system described below.

A+ through A- (625-563 points): Exceptional achievement of the course objectives will be evidenced by:

      • thoughtful completion of all assignments
      • consistent demonstration of in-depth understanding of the subject matter through active participation in class discussions
      • consistent demonstration of connections made between class discussions/assignments and the practical applications
      • innovative and critical thinking with regard to class content area

B+ through B- (562-500 points): Above average achievement of the course objectives will be evidenced by:

      • thoughtful completion of all assignments
      • frequent demonstration of in-depth understanding of the subject matter through active participation in class discussions
      • frequent demonstration of connections made between class discussions/assignments and the practical applications
      • critical thinking with regard to class content area

C+ through C- (499-438 points): Adequate achievement of course objectives will be evidenced by:

      • thoughtful completion of all assignments
      • frequent demonstration of basic understanding of subject matter through active participation in class discussions
      • demonstration of connections made between class discussions/assignments and the practical applications

D+ through D- (437-375points):Marginal achievement of course objectives will be evidenced by:

      • attempts to thoughtfully complete assignments
      • basic comprehensionof subject matter
      • attempts to demonstrate connections made between class discussions/assignments and practical applications

F (less than 374 points):Failure to meet course objectives evidenced by:

      • failure to attempt to thoughtfully complete assignments
      • failure to actively participate in class discussions
      • failure to demonstrate basic comprehension of subject matter
      • failure to attempt to make connections between class discussions/assignments and practical applications

  • Attendance: you must contact me if you will be absent. Students may not have more than two absences. If you miss more than two classes, you will not pass the course. If you are more than 10 minutes tardy three times, you will receive one absence.
