Course Description

Addresses some of the key ingredients for improving communications in organizations. Participants learn how to set priorities, improve communication effectiveness, build rapport, and handle conflict through better communication inside and outside the group environment.


Essential Objectives

1. Identify the skills necessary for good communication in an organizational setting (active listening, giving and accepting feedback, cooperation, assertiveness, non-verbal communication).
2. Identify the barriers to effective communication within an organization and describe possible solutions to typical problems.
3. Analyze one's own effectiveness in organizational communication.
4. Develop a set of strategies (e.g., setting priorities, building rapport, resolving conflict for improving one's communication effectiveness in organizational situations).

Artificial Intelligence(AI) Policy Statement

CCV recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI tools are widely available and becoming embedded in many online writing and creative applications.

Integrated: This course's generative AI policy acknowledges the use of AI is an essential skill in today's world. By using genAI for specific purposes, students become equipped with relevant skills and tools necessary to thrive in a technology-driven society. Emphasizing the mastery of generative AI should empower you to harness its potential, enhancing your problem-solving abilities and preparing you for future challenges and opportunities. Be aware, however, that any time generative AI is used at any point in the assignment without attribution it may be considered a violation of CCV's Academic Integrity Policy.


Methods

This is a self-paced course which means that students will be starting and progressing at different rates throughout the semester. Once you feel like you have a strong handle on the material, and you have completed all of the assignments for the module, you should feel comfortable moving on, regardless of the pace, as long as you complete the course within the semester timeframe.

The learning modules will consist of learning resources, demonstrate your learning forums, assignments and some modules have quizzes.

Demonstrate your Learning Forums are a part of every learning module and most are post first discussions- which means that you will post your reply before being able to read the replies of others.

The assignments, in addition to the Demonstrate Your Learning forums, will assess your learning of the module outcomes.

The quizzes are a part of some modules.


Evaluation Criteria

Mastery of Essential Objectives, level of participation, and overall quality of work including written mechanics.

Discussion Forums: Quality and quantity of posts. Learning is a collaborative effort among students, facilitated by the instructor.
Weekly Assignments: Assignments encompass real-world application and case studies as well as outside readings. Evaluation is individualized to the student via instructor comments.
Final Project: A final project where students integrate and synthesize elements of the course information. The final project ideally will fulfill a professional, business need for the student.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
