Course Description

This course examines the role that culture plays in the human communication process. Students will examine the various dimensions of communication in a culturally diverse society, including those in interpersonal, small group, organizational and mass media. Students will explore both the theories of intercultural communication and the verbal and nonverbal applications associated with becoming a competent and effective communicator.


Essential Objectives

1. Describe the central role that culture plays in all forms of communication and the important theories that provide the framework for understanding this field.
2. Explore the many factors that influence communication patterns within and across cultures, including those of race, class, gender, religion, age, abilities and sexual orientation.
3. Identify and reflect on cultural values that influence an individual’s perception and communication.
4. Interpret the social construction of verbal and nonverbal language, culture, and symbols.
5. Demonstrate communication competence through the awareness of intercultural dynamics and the effective application of verbal and nonverbal skills.
6. Prepare a formal presentation that demonstrates proficiency using the CCV Oral Communication Rubric.

Methods

Evaluation Criteria:

Quizzes - 20 % (four quizzes worth 10 points each)

Written Projects – 50% (two worth 25 points each)

Class Participation- 30% will be a combination of voluntary and Socratic (meaning that I will call on you).Lack of preparation will be noted.

Class Attendanceis required as is expected in the workplace. Class participation activities are included in each class. Your class participation grade is dependent uponyourenthusiastic and effective participation in class discussions/projects. Enthusiastic and effective participation requires you to:

  • Volunteer answers when they are posed;
  • Share personal/professional insights;
  • Share new ideas/different ways to approach a problem/discussion;
  • Volunteer for a leadership role;
  • Stay on task during class activities;
  • Resist any urge to check or use your cell phone or other electronic device unless it is requested as part of an activity;
  • Demonstrate sincere interest in the topic of the day;
  • Demonstrate a professional and positive attitude toward the class and toward other class members;
  • Volunteer to help other classmates when they are struggling with an answer or concept;
  • Encourage general class participation.

YOU ARE ALLOWED THREE (3) ABSENCES-NO QUESTIONS ASKED. UPON RECORDING A FOURTH ABSENCE, DEPENDING ON WHEN IN THE ACADEMIC CALENDAR IT FALLS, YOU WILL HAVE TO DROP THE CLASS AND TAKE THE ASSIGNED LETTER GRADE OF “W” or “F” - NO EXCEPTIONS!Please Note:An absence is an absence. I do not keep track of excused absences compared to unexcused absences. Unless there are extenuating circumstances (which I should be informed about), I expect you to attend every class.

SPECIAL NOTE:SHOWING UP FOR CLASS 20 MINS. OR MORE LATE QUALIFIES AS A FULL-DAY ABSENCE, UNLESS PRIOR PERMISSION GIVEN.

As adult learners, it is your responsibility to contact me to arrange submitting late work or to discuss missed info. due to an absence. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to have scheduled assignments in on time. A missed Quiz with no warning will result in a “0” for that Quiz.

Late written work must be approved by me (the instructor) and will have one letter grade deducted per day late, unless otherwise negotiated. As a policy, I do not give “incompletes” for the semester.

I reserve the right to make exceptions to the above late assignment policy, at my discretion, based upon extenuating circumstances.

Use of Laptops and texting: Laptopsare notpermitted in class, unless called for by the instructor. Texting and the use of the internet via PDA’s during class (unless it is class related or needed for an emergency) is also not allowed. The best thing to do is to stow it away during class. The “three strikes” rule applies-three warnings by me and you will be dropped from the class…no if’s, and’s or but’s!

Written work shall follow the APA format.Information regarding format and research papers in general can be found in the book entitled, “Research Writing Simplified” (fifth edition) by Raymond Clines & Elizabeth Cobb and on Moodle under “Resource Materials”. Papers will be evaluated using the “Essay Format” link in Moodle.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
