Activities:

Week 2 Discussion Forum: Communication Styles and Fearless Curiosity

Required Readings

  • Guzmán, I Never Thought of It That Way - Chapters 1-2
  • Complete one of the communication style assessments from Week 1

Discussion Prompts

Initial Post (Due Wednesday by 11:59 PM)

Write a 300-400 word post addressing ALL of the following:

Part 1: Fearless Curiosity at Work: Guzmán emphasizes the power of approaching conversations with "fearless curiosity" rather than assumptions. Think of a recent workplace situation where you or someone else made assumptions about a colleague's intentions, communication style, or perspective. If you are not currently working, reflect on a previous workplace situation, a family situation or a friend or neighborhood situation.

  • Briefly describe the situation (remember our confidentiality guidelines - use titles and generic descriptors)
  • How might "fearless curiosity" have changed the outcome?
  • What specific question could have been asked to understand the other person's perspective better?

Part 2: Communication Style Connection Based on your communication style assessment results:

  • Share 1-2 key insights about your communication preferences
  • How might your communication style sometimes create misunderstandings with colleagues who have different styles?
  • What's one way you could adapt your approach when working with someone whose style differs significantly from yours?

Part 3: Workplace Application: Guzmán talks about moving from "Why would you think that?" to "Help me understand how you came to think that."

  • How could this shift in questioning benefit your current or future workplace?
  • What barriers (time pressure, office culture, personal habits) might make this approach challenging in professional settings?

Response Posts (1 required, due Sunday by 11:59 PM)

Respond thoughtfully to two classmates' posts with 100-150 words each. Strong responses:

  • Connect their examples to concepts from Guzmán's chapters
  • Share a similar workplace experience or different perspective
  • Ask a follow-up question that demonstrates curiosity about their situation
  • Offer practical suggestions for implementing "fearless curiosity" in their context

Discussion Guidelines

Professional Tone: Maintain workplace-appropriate language and respect for all perspectives shared.

Confidentiality: Use job titles instead of names, generic organization descriptions, and modify identifying details.

Authentic Engagement: Share genuine experiences and insights rather than theoretical responses.

Constructive Curiosity: Practice the "fearless curiosity" Guzmán advocates by asking thoughtful questions in your responses.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

Discussion forums count as a substantial part of your grade.

A minimum of one response is required, unless otherwise specified. Responses are worth points.

Accessibility Services for Students with Disabilities:

CCV strives to mitigate barriers to course access for students with documented disabilities. To request accommodations, please
  1. Provide disability documentation to the Accessibility Coordinator at your academic center. https://ccv.edu/discover-resources/students-with-disabilities/
  2. Request an appointment to meet with accessibility coordinator to discuss your request and create an accommodation plan.
  3. Once created, students will share the accommodation plan with faculty. Please note, faculty cannot make disability accommodations outside of this process.

Academic Integrity

CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
