Evaluation Criteria

Evaluation Criteria

Grading for this course is accomplished using the following tools:

  • Grading rubrics pertaining to specific criteria.
  • Letter grading scale A-F
  • Narrative assessment, commentary and evaluation

Students should approach grading as a way to understand their own particular style of learning, i.e., their own individual strengths and weaknesses as learners. Working toward good grades can be personally motivating, but should never take the place of being inspired to learn. Grading is a tool, not a system of punishment/reward. Fixation on high grades as a singular goal can be detrimental to learning.

CCV Letter Grades as outlined in the Evaluation System Policy are assigned according to the following chart:

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Missing & Late Work Policy

CLASS REQUIREMENTS:

Your ability to meet these requirements is graded as a component of your Participation Grade. Participation counts for 40% of your overall grade. Take these requirements seriously; if you don't understand what's expected of you, ask.

You are expected to:

  • Understand how to use Canvas
  • Check your CCV email daily
  • Only use your CCV email address for this course, no personal email
  • Make sure you have my CCV email address in your contact list cxd05080@vsc.edu
  • Put my cell number in your phone (802) 379-4726
  • Check Announcements for this course daily--when I post, I expect you to respond via text
  • Come to class on time and prepared
  • Follow classroom cellphone rules
  • Understand and respect the difference between classroom discussion and cross talking
  • Include your advisor in any matters pertaining to missed assignments and/or classes or any other conflict you are having in this class.

ADDRESS any and all PROBLEMS IMMEDIATELY (or ASAP) BEFORE THEY GET OUT OF HAND. Don't assume problems will go away on their own.

CANCELLED CLASSES

Weather conditions, unexpected instructor illness or emergency can lead to unavoidable cancellations by an instructor. If I'm forced to cancel a class, you will be notified either by me or CCV. If CCV cancels a class for any reason, you will be notified by CCV. Assignment due dates will not change.

MISSED CLASSES

DON'T SKIP CLASS--YOUR GRADE WILL BE AFFECTED & YOU COULD POTENTIALLY FAIL THE COURSE

I'm required by CCV to show up for you, I expect you to do the same for me and your fellow students. Emergencies have to be real emergencies; illness has to mean you are running a fever and/or are too sick to come to school out of respect for yourself and others.

If you miss a class, no matter the reason, you are responsible for getting caught up.

HOMEWORK AND CLASS PARTICIPATION

  • Submit all homework on time--late assignments affect your grade
  • Take part in all in-class assignments and exercises
  • Understand your own strengths and weaknesses as a learner
  • Technical difficulties are not an excuse to skip assignments or turn in late work

Accessibility Services for Students with Disabilities:

CCV strives to mitigate barriers to course access for students with documented disabilities. To request accommodations, please
  1. Provide disability documentation to the Accessibility Coordinator at your academic center. https://ccv.edu/discover-resources/students-with-disabilities/
  2. Request an appointment to meet with accessibility coordinator to discuss your request and create an accommodation plan.
  3. Once created, students will share the accommodation plan with faculty. Please note, faculty cannot make disability accommodations outside of this process.

Academic Integrity

CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
