Course Description

This course focuses on management tasks and considerations for enterprise-level information technology systems. Topics include network infrastructure components, security devices, VoIP systems, service delivery systems, and system management applications. Prerequisite: System Administration.


Essential Objectives

1. Discuss various techniques for hardening an installation against intrusion, including configuration of firewall, system services and startup options, management of the root account, and use of other system hardening and detection tools.
2. Discuss the Internet services available under Windows and Linux Server, including the Apache server.
3. Demonstrate the installation the latest version of email server packages on both a Linux system and Windows system.
4. Compare and contrast the various options for user authentication on systems.
5. Discuss the need for remote access and administration of servers and demonstrate the use of common access methods.
6. Perform advanced network configuration by configuring and deploying network services like AAA systems and OpenLDAP Servers.
7. Understand the concepts and technologies used to create a SAN and describe the differences and common implementations of DAS, SAN, and NAS and the cloud NAS model.
8. Explain the need for a comprehensive backup and disaster recovery plan and prepare such a plan for a sample small business using the backup and restore options available for Windows servers.
9. Demonstrate the process of rights and permissions to network resources and Group Policies.
10. Prepare a plan for implementing a server based Local Area Network in a small business environment, including network infrastructure, client PCs, VoIP, shared printer, and server(s) supplying file and print services, email, voice, and a web presence.
11. Discuss the advanced usage of virtual and cloud resources in an overall system architecture.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.
