Course Description

This course introduces client-side programming for the internet using the JavaScript language. After learning the basic syntax and structures, students use JavaScript to add dynamic, interactive elements to web pages. In addition, students use JavaScript and the Document Object Model to perform various tasks including checking HTML form data prior to processing at the web server. Prerequisite: Website Development.


Essential Objectives

1. Describe how and why JavaScript was developed and what distinguishes this scripting language from the Java programming language.
2. List the operators and data types supported in JavaScript.
3. Explain how scalar variables and arrays are declared and named.
4. Discuss how JavaScript can be integrated into HTML documents.
5. Explain how JavaScript functions are structured, including the role of the optional return statement.
6. Create scripts incorporating JavaScript's decision and loop structures, including if...else, switch, counter-controlled, and top- and bottom-tested loops.
7. Discuss JavaScript's support for object-oriented programming and explain how object methods and properties are used.
8. Explain what events handlers are and discuss their use in creating dynamic Web pages.
9. Discuss the Document Object Model and its use in client-side scripting.
10. Create scripts that make effective use of the document, history, location, and navigator objects.
11. Create scripts that use form object properties and methods to validate HTML form data before submission to a Web server.
12. Explain what HTTP cookies are and discuss their use and abuse on the World Wide Web.
13. Create client-side scripts that store and retrieve data using cookies.
14. Design a portfolio of work that demonstrates JavaScript skills and explore ways to share the information with potential employers.

Required Textbooks and Resources

The last day to use a Financial Aid Advance to purchase textbooks/books is the 3rd Tuesday of the semester. See your financial aid counselor at your academic center if you have any questions.


Methods

Time will be divided among discussions, lectures, and lab time. Each week students will have both reading and an assignment for the principal topics in the course. It is important that these assignments are completed on time in order to participate effectively.

Projects and assignments will require computer time either using an appropriately equipped home or office computer.

Exercises will be available on Canvas to be downloaded. Some will be derived from the textbook. Additional resources will be posted on Canvas to supplement the textbook. All are due the week after they are set, except where noted.

All quizzes and exams will be done on line through Canvas, and will be open for a maximum of seven days to facilitate completion. There will be no make-up exams.

Discussions:
We will use the Canvas discussion area to post discussions. These will be used to establish "presence" for each week. Each person must post at least a full paragraph and respond to other posts. These posts will be graded and will count towards your final mark. People may respond to a particular item in the discussion board and continue it as a thread. Threads may not be graded, but they are encouraged as a form of dialog. Discussions will normally be closed one week after they are posted.

Remember: if you get an A on the assignments alone, you only have 45% of your final mark and still cannot pass the course.
Assignments may be repeated for programming practice, and for a better grade at the discretion of the instructor.
Assignments:
Assignments should always be handed in on time, since they reflect the work done up to that point, and will lose points if they are late. All assignments must be submitted electronically using Canvas. The use of a flash drives (thumb drives) is recommended as a backup. All quizzes and exams will be conducted on-line on Canvas.
Records:
It is strongly recommended that you save all the work that you do. You may need to refer back to it later in the semester. In case of error or dispute, an assignment that cannot be produced on demand will be given a zero grade.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.


Participation Expectations

Participation will be evaluated using the weekly discussions.

Missing three (3) contiguous weeks will require contacting me to establish the commitment to continue, and the requirements for catching up, prior to returning to the course.



Missing & Late Work Policy

All assignments will be submitted through Canvas.

Assignments are due the week after they are set. Late work will lose points after the first week. Any exercise submitted on time can be re-submitted for a better grade and practice.

Late work submitted in the last week will not be considered for a grade but may be given a review.

Check Canvas through the week for materials, updates and discussions.

Please reach out and ask questions if anything is unclear.

Please e-mail me if you have to miss a class. Two absences mean that you will have lost about 12% of the course instruction and will affect your grade.
