Course Description:

A hands-on introduction to information processing using operating system and application software designed for computers and mobile devices. Covers file management, presentation graphics, word processing, and spreadsheets. Basic algebra skills are recommended.

Essential Objectives:

1. Describe the hardware components of a computer system and explain how they work together. Describe the general functions of the operating system and its interaction with computer hardware and applications software.
2. Describe the significance and threat of computer malware (e.g., Trojans, worms, spyware, phishing) and demonstrate an understanding of the need for safe computing practices and current methods of file backup procedures.
3. Discuss the importance of a file management system and apply file management principles on local or remote networks (i.e., cloud computing).
4. Explain the function and primary features of a word processing program for use in creating, editing and formatting letters, resumes, research papers, newsletters including mail merge, desktop publishing, and sharing images across applications.
5. Explain the function and primary features of a spreadsheet program. Design and build a spreadsheet using labels, values, formulas, functions, and differentiating between absolute and relative references. Modify a spreadsheet using various copying and formatting options designed for data manipulation. Build and print a graph/chart.
6. Use spreadsheet software to present and analyze quantitative information, to draw conclusions from information, and to evaluate the reliability of those conclusions.
7. Create an effective presentation to demonstrate proficiency in using text, graphs, organizational charts, tables, artwork, drawing tools, and multimedia.
8. Identify and understand Internet resources and search engines for effective research and retrieval of information on a specific topic.
9. Identify and understand the appropriate uses of these software applications in the work environment.
10. Discuss legal and ethical issues related to computers and information processing including copyright infringement and plagiarism.
11. Demonstrate an ability to access, navigate and participate in an online learning environment.


This is an online intensive course.

There is a great deal of material covered in a very short period of time.  Please take a look at the syllabus and at least one chapter of the text to understand the work that is involved.  (Your advisor can help locate the book for you.)

We have no class time to cover the basics of using a computer, how to access the Moodle classroom, or how to fix a broken computer.  We will learn file management, how to send and receive files, and other intermediate computer skills. 

We use, an internet site which provides great tutorials for Micdosoft Word.  If you are using other office applications, you will likely find equivalent instruction there, as well. . We will also explore some of the mysteries of computers, and think about and discuss electronic ethics and invasions.

I do not take any time off during this course.  Each week's assignment is due the following week, with a very few exceptions. I will grade your work promptly.  Work submitted late will not get the careful attention that on time work does.  And cannot warn a grade greater than "C."

Evaluation Criteria:

Evaluation Criteria: Completion Requirements/ Criteria for Evaluation 1. Participation in class discussion and activities. Contribution of personal talents in completing online group discussions and forums.. 2. Satisfactory and timely completion of work assigned. All work is due the week after it is assigned. Except for the final portfolio, work may be turned in one week late and will receive a 20 point deduction for lateness. This class is an intensive, and if a student is late with work multiple times, catching up and receiving a passing grade is very unlikely. Homework assignments and in class work 80% Contribution of personal talents in completing online group work and discussions. 20%

Grading Criteria:

Grading Criteria is as follows: A = A student who earns this grade has demonstrated complete mastery of the course material, contributed personal talents toward class goals, and completed superior extra credit work.. All of the minimum assigned material was submitted with grades that averaged 90-100%. B= A student who earns this grade has demonstrated mastery of the course material, with perhaps one weaker area, minor problems with the work submitted, or because of working more slowly than others, has not been able to submit extra credit work or share personal talents. The minimum assigned material was submitted and received grades that averaged 80-100%. C= A student who earns this grade has mastered the general principles being taught, but may have problems with details in some of the areas. Alternatively, s/he may not have submitted all of the minimum assigned work (missing work is averaged in as a grade of zero), and the average grade for all work averaged 70-79%. D= A student who earns this grade has had difficulty understanding the work, but has demonstrated some knowledge of it, as evidenced by the submission of all or part of the written work, with an average grade for all assigned work of 60-69%. F= A student who receives this grade has not demonstrated a reasonable mastery of the work, or may not have turned in enough of the assigned work to earn an average grade of at least 60%.

The last day to use a Financial Aid advance to purchase textbooks is the 3rd Tuesday of the semester. See your financial aid counselor at your academic center if you have any questions.

Attendance Policy:

 Since you only have seven classes, you may miss no more than one to get a passing grade.  Attendance in this online class means  that you post on a forum or submit work in Moodle from one Tuesday  to the next.  If you have special needs in this regard, please contact me by email and we will talk.
