Course Description

This course examines the critical issues and the strategic questions that must be considered when managing diverse groups of people in today’s workplace. Topics include: selecting, training, and evaluating personnel; compensation; health and safety; bargaining units; motivation; morale; and human relations.


Essential Objectives

1. Explain what human resource management is and describe its role and development in organizations.
2. Summarize the differences between the personnel function and line operations.
3. Discuss the primary personnel practices and apply them to specific situations, including: a) evaluate the personnel needs of an organization; b) determine specifications of a position and write a job description; c) plan a strategy for employee recruitment and selection; d) develop a wage and price scale; e) design a personnel record-keeping system; f) formulate a strategy for performance evaluation and appropriate responses; and g) identify training needs
4. Describe the influence labor unions and the collective bargaining process have on the personnel function.
5. Discuss the federal and state regulations that influence the personnel function on such issues as health, safety and equity.
6. Analyze and discuss ethical considerations in the personnel function including gender wage disparity and sexual harassment.
7. Discuss the ethical considerations inherent in personnel decisions.
8. Discuss issues of equity as they relate to personnel management.
9. Recognize what constitutes harassment and describe means for resolving harassment issues.

Required Textbooks and Resources

The last day to use a Financial Aid Advance to purchase textbooks/books is the 3rd Tuesday of the semester. See your financial aid counselor at your academic center if you have any questions.


Methods

Participation: In an online class this takes the form of discussion forums that will be open through the week and weekend for initial and reply threaded posts. You will be encouraged to pull and apply what you are learning into the discussions.

Quizzes: There will be one quiz per chapter, consisting of multiple choice and true/false questions. You may submit them at any time before the end of the semester (the only deadline is the last day of class).

Assignments: You will be given a prompt or asked to choose a prompt from your text. In these writing assignments the goal will be to apply relevant concepts in the modules to the prompts appropriately and in a way that demonstrates your understanding of those concepts.

Final Project: Interview and analysis of a human resources employee - you will as questions of a working human resources employee and analyze their attitudes, tactics, and philosophy based on what you learned in the course. You will opine as to how they are successful and how you might do things differently given your learning.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.
