MODULE 9 TOPIC: YOUR CAREER IN BUSINESS

Overview:

This is the Module to explore careers in business and to develop a resume or cover letter (or both!). Even if you have no intention of applying for a job, it's always a good idea to create a resume and update it frequently. Many of us have different resumes. Some folks have one for the academic side of their professional life and another for their consulting/business expertise. Be sure to get in the habit of collecting and storing awards, letters of accommodation, letters of reference, performance reviews, etc.

Objectives:

1. Identify employment opportunities.

2. Identify strategies to optimize your success in job interviews.

3. Identify the scope and diversity of career opportunities in the Business Field.

4. Create a cover letter or a resume using a proper format.

Resources:

· Introduction to Business: Chapter 17

· Read the article A Simple Way to Map Out Your Career Ambitions (Links to an external site.)

· Review the Interviewing Checklist (Links to an external site.) from Indeed

Assignment Title: Targeted Resume or Cover Letter

Even if you have no intention of applying for a job, it’s a good idea to go through the following process as it will likely come up in the future! Career counselors suggest that we create a resume and update it yearly and that we should get in the habit of collecting and storing in some kind of work portfolio – awards, letters of accommodation, letters of reference, performance reviews that you receive or earn, etc – so that we can add them to our resumes!

For this assignment, you will complete a resume or a cover letter that is targeted to a job you are interested in. Please follow the steps below:

1. Visit Career Services (Links to an external site.). Career Services is aware of your class assignments and career consultants are ready to help you.

2. Locate a potential job opportunity on one of the major job sites. Several are listed in Chapter 17 (Gitman) with links. Save the link to the job opportunity so that you can include it with your assignment submission.

3. Take that job posting and write down the keywords included in it. These keywords should be included in your cover letter or resume. Often a computer is sorting through the resumes and will electronically forward the ones that include the key terms posted in the job advertisement.

4. Then, create a cover letter or a resume for your desired position. Career Services has great Resume Resources (Links to an external site.) and Cover Letter Resources (Links to an external site.) with samples and suggestions to help you complete either option.

For this assignment you will either:

Submit a one-page resume following one of the Career Services templates. Note: If you have a resume, feel free to submit your resume for this assignment but make sure that includes the keywords from the job description.

OR

Create a properly formatted cover letter for the position. Pay close attention to the keywords in the job description. Try to include these keywords in your cover letter. Address the cover letter to a real person. If a person is not listed in the job description, then reach out to the company to find out who will be receiving the cover letter. Do not use the salutation: To Whom It May Concern. Do a little detective work and do not hesitate to let the company know this is for your college class.

AND

Include a document titled ‘Job Description and References’ that includes:

· A link to the job description you are applying for.

· A list of the keywords that are included in the job description. For each keyword, describe in one sentence where/how it is included in your resume or cover letter.

· A reference for the template you used for your cover letter or resume if you are using one from Career Services.

Because most jobs today depend on managing information – obtaining, using, creating, and sharing it – this module begins with the role of information in decision-making and the relationship between computers and information systems.

Information technology (IT) includes the equipment and techniques used to manage and process information. Information is at the heart of all organizations. Discussion Question/Demonstrate Your Learning Forum Prompt:

Employee Monitoring Software - To install or Not to install? That is the question: As the owner of a small but growing business, you are concerned about employees misusing company computers for personal matters. Not only does this cost the company in terms of employee productivity, but it also ties up bandwidth that may be required for company operations and exposes the firm’s networks to increased risks of attacks from viruses, spyware, and other malicious programs. Installing e-mail monitoring and web security and filtering software programs would allow you to track e-mail and internet use, develop use policies, block access to inappropriate sites, and limit the time employees can conduct personal online business. At the same time, the software will protect your IT networks from many types of security concerns, from viruses to internet fraud. You are concerned, however, that employees will take offense and consider such software an invasion of privacy.

Using the Hartness Library or the web, locate articles about this topic and then write responses to the following questions. Be sure to support your arguments and cite (Links to an external site.) your sources.

· Should you purchase employee-monitoring software for your company, and on what do you base your decision?

· If you install the software, do you have an obligation to tell employees about it? Explain your answers and suggest ways to help employees understand your rationale.

· After viewing the article: “6 Software Tools for Monitoring Employee Productivity, (Links to an external site.)” select one software tool from the article and describe how the software can assist the company and how the software can assist the employee. Some of these tools are time management-oriented and some are “spy and report” type of software. (Be sure to cite this source in your post)

Make sure that your answer is substantive. Aim at 300 to 350 words well cited in APA format. Post and then reply to two classmates' posts for full credit. Make sure your replies are also substantive beyond that you agree or disagree.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

Participation in the online classroom is counted by your substantive posts and replies in the discussion forums. You are considered present by submitting any work for the week.

The following is how I calculate the earned midterm and final grade for attendance :

0 absences = 100

1 absence = 85

2 absences= 70

3 absences= 55

Participating in the online classroom is essential to create a lively and rich virtual learning experience and as you can see this will count for 25 percent of your grade.

Missing & Late Work Policy

  • Late assignments can be submitted up to one week past the deadline. You will lose 10 points off the earned grade. After a week, it will no longer be accepted for credit and the 0 will stand.
  • Late work is not accepted in the discussion forum. Interacting with classmates is an essential part of online discussions and cannot be made up after the fact.
  • Extensions will be granted only in extenuating circumstances. If a lengthy medical problem or other emergent personal issue will result in missing weekly assignments, please contact your instructor as soon as possible.
  • Don't just disappear. This is a college class. I will not chase you. Reach out to me if you have an extenuating circumstance. If you get in touch with me ahead of time usually some arrangement can be made.

Accessibility Services for Students with Disabilities:

CCV strives to mitigate barriers to course access for students with documented disabilities. To request accommodations, please
  1. Provide disability documentation to the Accessibility Coordinator at your academic center. https://ccv.edu/discover-resources/students-with-disabilities/
  2. Request an appointment to meet with accessibility coordinator to discuss your request and create an accommodation plan.
  3. Once created, students will share the accommodation plan with faculty. Please note, faculty cannot make disability accommodations outside of this process.

Academic Integrity

CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
