Synchronous Class

Synchronous courses are delivered through a combination of online and regularly-scheduled Zoom sessions. In synchronous classes, students must attend Zoom sessions and actively engage with each other and faculty in course activities and discussions.

Course Description

This course serves as a capstone for the Visual Arts, Graphic Design, and Multimedia Communications programs. Students explore career opportunities and collaborate with each other and employers on real-world projects. Students orally present their body of work, which will be displayed in traditional or digital formats. They develop a digital portfolio of their best work to be used for a variety of purposes such as professional job applications, scholarship opportunities, and transfer to four-year programs. Prerequisite: Minimum of 30 college-level credits or advisor permission.


Essential Objectives

1. Explore career opportunities and connections in fields related to communication, design, and visual arts.
2. Examine, discuss, and critique visual imagery, time-based media, and forms of communication including historical examples and references to social and cultural contexts.
3. Work collaboratively in teams to execute a project that is professionally displayed, distributed, and/or accessed within the community.
4. Develop an independent portfolio representing works created over a span of time, and display in a professional manner.
5. Think and speak critically about one’s own and others' work.
6. Produce an articulate written artist statement or creative brief to support the portfolio and/or group project.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.


Participation Expectations

-This course has three main components. Creating new work, participating in critical discussions on artistic practice and theory, and honing professional writing skills as it relates to professional practices.

-Students are required to generate original work, fitting with their professional aspirations (Visual Arts, Graphic Design or Multimedia Communications) which will be critiqued; some assignments will be structured others will be open for the student to create work of their choosing.

-All students are responsible for checking and interacting with the Canvas site and activities on a regular basis.

-All students are expected to review materials in Canvas prior to the week's meeting, and be prepared for discussion and to ask questions during the zoom session.

-All students should have some capability to document their artistic work and load images digitally to the Canvas site, and eventually to the student’s individual website.

-It is a requirement of this course, to not only check the Canvas site on a regular basis, but also to check their CCV webmail account.

-This course is intended to hone design and media skills developed from prior coursework, to develop personal style. Students are expected to apply knowledge and skills acquired from previous course work to complete creative projects.

-This course has a synchronous component which means that students are required to meet for on a specific date and time using Zoom, a video conferencing service. Students are expected to attend the Zoom session, turn on video and participate either through the chat or verbally in class discussions.



Missing & Late Work Policy

Work must be completed in a timely fashion, and submitted in Canvas no later than the due date posted, please pay close attention to deadlines posted in Canvas. Late work will only be accepted by prior permission of the instructor. Creative assignments that were submitted on time and critiqued, may be reworked for a better grade. Any intent to rework an assignment must be approved by the instructor.

Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
