Course Description

This course introduces students to the use of pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, and other drawing mediums with a focus on observational drawing skills. Students develop a deeper understanding of drawing as a way of seeing, organizing ideas, and recording perceptions of the world around them.

Essential Objectives

1. Explore the use of a variety of drawing mediums and different drawing surfaces including a variety of paper types and sizes.
2. Draw a variety of subjects such as still life, landscape, and human forms.
3. Develop a drawing vocabulary that includes elements of art (line, shape, color, value, texture, form, and space) and principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity/ variety) through discussion and critique.
4. Apply elements of art and principles of design in one's own drawing.
5. Examine, discuss and critique artwork that includes the art/design historical, social, and cultural context with emphasis on the impact of global and/or cultural diversity on the development of drawing as an art form.
6. Design and complete individual projects.
7. Create a portfolio of drawings and display finished works in a professional manner.

Methods

This is a highly interactive, hands-on course, and your success is directly tied to your active participation. The majority of our time will be spent working practically on your drawings. Formal lectures and group critiques are scheduled for the beginning of each class session, and new homework assignments will be introduced following our break.

• 70% Homework Assignments:(Approx. 4–6 hours per week)
• 20% Participation:(Approx. 2.5–3 hours of in-class work per week; weekly rubrics vary)

Weekly Schedule

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

• In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
• Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
• Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

Attendance to all classes is required. No make-up work will be accepted for missed classes. Three absences in a semester will result in an automatic F in the class.

• Engagement with in-class projects
• Adherence toCCV’s Rules of Conduct
• Homework assignments submitted on time (particularly for critiques)
• Contribution to critiques
• Posting in weekly discussion galleries

Missing & Late Work Policy

Missing and late assignments will be accepted; however, the primary reason students fail this class is falling behind. With an average of five hours of homework expected per week, this can happen very quickly. Because each module builds upon the previous one, missing an assignment will hinder your overall progression.

In modules containing critiques, assignments not presented to the class will result in a loss of points within the participation rubric section.

Submission Deadlines for Late/Reworked Assignments:

• Work from Modules 1–5 must be submitted by the midterm.
• Work from Modules 7–12 will be accepted until the start of Module 14.
