Methods

How this Course Works:

Each Week runs from Tuesday through Monday Midnight.

Each week there will be a reading assignment, drawing exercises, and web resources links to articles and instructional videos. There will also be a Weekly Gallery featuring Masters of Drawing: artists who provide inspiration.

In the A Forum, you answer questions related to the weekly reading usually from the text by Betty Edwards, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". 40 Points

In the B Forum, you post your drawing exercises for the week. You also provide a reflective evaluation of your progress for that week. 60 Points

There is a midterm and final showcase, critique and reflection. 100 points each.

All work needs to be completed for the week by Monday Midnight. New week starts Tuesday.

Important Textbook and Workbook Information

There are two books you will need for this course.

Textbook: "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards ISBN: 978-1-58542-920-2

Workbook: "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook by Betty Edwards ISBN 978-1-58542-922-6

The course will follow the reading in the text and the companion exercises in the workbook. This is the basis for the syllabus. We will be following the 4th edition textbook, but older editions contain much of the same content and can be found online to purchase as used. The workbook accompanies the textbook and is needed to complete weekly assignments for skill building. You must purchase an unused copy of the workbook because you will be drawing in the workbook and photographing or scanning your completed assignments for me to assess your skills. You will also be completing other assignments on drawing paper (see the Materials List). Order the textbook and workbook as soon as possible so that you will be ready to complete the week 1 assignments during the first week of the semester.

Materials needed for Drawing I are as follows:

Digital camera or Flatbed Scanner or a phone that photographs

11" x 14" white drawing paper suitable for wet or dry media

9" x 12" drawing paper

Masking Tape

Drawing pencils (different sizes are the best but be sure to have 2B pencils)

Drawing Charcoal (vine or compressed)

Pink Pearl and Kneaded Eraser

India Ink

Dip Pen and # 56 pen nib

Blending sticks or tissue

Pitt Pens or any washable felt tip or razor point pen

Optional: Pastels and Colored Pencils.

And any other art supplies you would like to add.

If you want to find all of these in one place and you don't have a store near you, I would suggest ordering online from Dick Blick. They have it all and you can have it in a week or so.

A Forum: 40 points x 12 weeks = 480

B Forum: 60 points x 12 weeks = 720

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Accessibility Services for Students with Disabilities:

CCV strives to mitigate barriers to course access for students with documented disabilities. To request accommodations, please
  1. Provide disability documentation to the Accessibility Coordinator at your academic center. https://ccv.edu/discover-resources/students-with-disabilities/
  2. Request an appointment to meet with accessibility coordinator to discuss your request and create an accommodation plan.
  3. Once created, students will share the accommodation plan with faculty. Please note, faculty cannot make disability accommodations outside of this process.

Academic Integrity

CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
