Methods

I believe I have a positive teaching philosophy when it comes to Homework and Quizzes. You will have the ability within the homework software to check your work as you go along. This will tell you if you got the answer right or not, but it will not tell you the right answers if you are wrong. It will give you hints and reference points to look back to in the textbook to see where to find the answer.

Why am I making this feedback available as you go along? The reason is simply because my teaching philosophy is to promote learning every way I can. During the past several years that I have been teaching, I have found that students work much harder on their homework when there are check points along the way that let them know whether or not they are on track. If there are no check points, students just do the problem as they see fit and that’s it. With feedback and check points, if students do not get the correct answer the first time, they typically go back over it until they get the right answer. This promotes better learning of the material, and lessens the discouragement students may feel due to the difficulty of this subject matter. If you are willing to put in the time to work the problems until you get the correct answers, you will do very well in this class.
This capability is not available on the Exams however, as I do need to be able to assess that you are learning the material!!
Weekly assignments include reading the text, reviewing the lecture materials, doing practice problems, participating in the discussion board and doing the homework and quiz. This is a 4 credit course and requires a good amount of work, 8 to 12 hours per week.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

Two separate posts per week are the minimum requirement. One post to the homework discussion in which you are trying to answer another student’s homework question counts towards these 2 posts, but at least one post must be in one of the other discussion threads.

· The Discussion Board is the quickest way to get help with homework. Each week there will be a discussion thread for homework help. I strongly encourage students to help each other with homework but NOT to provide the answers directly. I usually wait a day or so for other students to answer before I jump in and answer the question myself. I encourage students to help other students. Please don't hesitate to do this or to raise any questions if something is not clear. I encourage you to start on your homework early in the week to take maximum advantage of this. If you are posting homework questions on the day that the homework is due, you are not going to get the help you need.

· Each week we will have at least two discussion threads. This will be our online equivalent of class discussions. Remember that input to the discussion board counts 5% of your final grade.

· NOTE: Because the homework in this class is so much work and takes a lot of time, I do not require a significant amount of participation on the Discussion Board. Two meaningful posts per week is the requirement, but feel free to post more often if you like. Most students are usually fine with this, but I have had students who like more activity on the Discussion Board. Please be aware that this minimal requirement is intentional to give students who are busy more time to devote to their weekly assignments. Everyone should feel free to be on the Discussion Board as they see fit, as long as everyone meets the minimal requirement.

Missing & Late Work Policy

If you cannot submit an Assignment on-time: We all get busy and this is an allowance for a week when things may have just gotten away from you, or an illness or an emergency has come up. During each half of the semester, you may submit a homework assignment late that you did not complete when it was due. The first half of the semester is all the chapters leading up to the Midterm and the second half of the semester is all the chapters between the Midterm and the Final Exam.

Ø Homework from one chapter may be submitted late with no penalty.

Ø For each chapter after that, 10 points (out of a 100) will be deducted from your grade on that homework assignment.

Ø Work from the chapters covered by the Midterm Exam must be handed in prior to the Midterm Exam to receive credit, and work from the chapters covered by the Final Exam must be handed in prior to the Final Exam.

Ø In order to use this “free pass” on submitting HW late, you must notify me by email at least 24 hours prior to the due date of the HW assignment. If you let me know after the assignment was due it will be too late.

Accessibility Services for Students with Disabilities:

CCV strives to mitigate barriers to course access for students with documented disabilities. To request accommodations, please
  1. Provide disability documentation to the Accessibility Coordinator at your academic center. https://ccv.edu/discover-resources/students-with-disabilities/
  2. Request an appointment to meet with accessibility coordinator to discuss your request and create an accommodation plan.
  3. Once created, students will share the accommodation plan with faculty. Please note, faculty cannot make disability accommodations outside of this process.

Academic Integrity

CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
