Course Blurbs and Essential Objectives

BUS-2360   Leadership Development   3 Credits
 
This course focuses on the development of leadership skills in a professional setting. Students explore leadership styles and group dynamics theory and how leadership models are put into practice.
 
    1. Define leadership and explain the 'visioning' process and its place in leadership.
    2. Examine the application of goal-setting, decision-making, and problem-solving processes and strategies.
    3. Describe current leadership theories and styles and critically analyze their strengths and vulnerabilities.
    4. Analyze how civic engagement, social responsibility, ethics, and values relate to leadership by exploring different scenarios and leadership dilemmas.
    5. Discuss effective intrapersonal communication strategies in relation to leadership styles and conflict management.
    6. Analyze group dynamics and leadership theory to identify strategies and opportunities for team-building and to motivate others.
    7. Explain effective time and meeting management skills.
    8. Discuss role of racial, ethnic and gender diversity in leadership.
    9. Examine personal values, identities, and intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and how these shape leadership.
    10. Develop a leadership philosophy that demonstrates an awareness of abilities, style, and the civic, moral, and ethical responsibilities of leadership.
    11. Demonstrate how to effectively articulate leadership skills and abilities for a job search.
