Course Blurbs and Essential Objectives

AHS-2200   Administrative Medical Assisting   3 Credits
 
This course is designed to prepare medical assisting students with administrative knowledge and skills related to duties performed in a medical office. Topics include computer applications, telephone etiquette, patient reception, medical records, coding and filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services, and handling correspondence, billing and bookkeeping. Prerequisites: Medical Terminology and a criminal background check.
 
    1. Discuss medical assisting as a profession, identify ways in which medical assistants incorporate into health care teams, and establish career goals.
    2. Discuss the professional organizations that certify medical assistants and the value of certification.
    3. Describe the ethical and legal environment of health care and evaluate appropriate ethical and legal choices in a health care setting.
    4. Demonstrate a full understanding of HIPAA regulations as applied in a health care setting.
    5. Identify and differentiate between office facilities, equipment, and supplies.
    6. Demonstrate effective communication skills, including telephone techniques, patient reception, admission techniques, and appointment scheduling.
    7. Demonstrate effective communication during complex patient care scenarios related to medical records management, medical insurance, appointment scheduling, and patient education.
    8. Apply principles of documentation and demonstrate effective use of electronic systems for scheduling, insurance billing, coding, and medical records maintenance.
    9. Demonstrate effective banking and bookkeeping techniques, including writing checks, preparing bank deposits, maintaining petty cash funds, and preparing employee payroll.
    10. Demonstrate accounting functions such as posting charges, payments and adjustments, and collection agency receipts.
    11. Identify the principles of medical malpractice insurance and develop a plan for professional and personal liability coverage in the workplace.
    12. Demonstrate and practice professional conduct in the workplace and effective written and oral communication with patients, coworkers, and supervisors.
