Course Description

This course is a survey of human anatomy and physiology. Topics include the organization and structure of the major body systems, including muscular, skeletal, nervous, circulatory, digestive, excretory, endocrine, and reproductive. Emphasis placed on the integration of bodily processes and the impact of technology on human biology.

Essential Objectives

1. Describe the structure and function of a cell and understand the major processes involved in its physiology.
2. Understand the anatomy and physiology of how the nervous and endocrine systems control body functions.
3. Describe the processes of development and reproduction at the cellular and structural levels and be able to discuss the role of genetics in this system.
4. Explain the basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular, lymphatic, and respiratory systems.
5. Explain the basic anatomy and physiology of the digestive and urinary systems.
6. Understand the specific and interrelated functions of the major body systems.
7. Identify the placement of the major bones and muscles of the body and understand their basic physiology.
8. Understand the structure and function of the human sensory organs.
9. Explain how technology affects human biology and discuss the ethical issues associated with this topic.
10. Utilize the scientific method to evaluate well-researched evidence in the area of human biology.
11. Demonstrate proficiency in understanding, interpreting, evaluating, and applying quantitative data and information.
12. Explain how knowledge created in the natural sciences has contributed to the creation, maintenance and dismantling of social inequalities and discuss the impacts of diversity and inclusion on scientific research and practice.

This three credit course is a 100% online(does not use in-person, zoom meetings OR does not require you to be online at a specific time).

• Students are expected to be active participants in class discussions
• Students should work together and respect each other.
• Homework, Assignment, presentations which are missed or submitted after the due date will not be accepted.
• Missed or late given quizzes or exams, will not get the second chance.
• Homework, Assignment work is due by the end of each week.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION

• Quizzes(25%)-Throughout the semester, there will be a number of quizzes on each chapter. Please see the syllabus for the detail on when these will occur during the semester. The format of these assessments will include a combination of any or all of the following: multiple choice, matching, true or False, Fill in the Blanks, short answer questions. These quizzes will be done online and you can use the material when taking them but remember they are timed quizzes and allows only one attempt.
• Exams(40%)-Throughout the semester, you will have two exams Midterm and Final. Please see the syllabus for the detail on when these will occur during the semester. The format of these assessments will include a combination of any or all of the following: multiple choice, matching, true or False, Fill in the Blanks, short answer questions.These exams will be done online and you can use the material when taking them but remember they are timed exames allows only one attempt.
• Research Project (5%) –You will pick a topic for research and will do project on it. We will discuss this in detail when the time comes.
• Online Homework (5%) and assignments (15%) -You will be required to submit weekly online homework and assignments. You are allowed one attempt only but it is not time restricted so you can work on it throughout the week, and at the end of the week you will have to submit the assignment. Short answer questions will be manually graded at the end of the following week.
• Attendance/Participation in Discussion Forum (10%) - I expect that you will be active in the discussion forums each week. You should post/response throughout the week. Your postings/responses should include meaningful responses to either the required questions or to other students. Here’s how grades for this will be assessed:· 0 posts per week = 0%, 1-2 posts per week = 25-50%· 3 - 4 posts per week = 50-80 %, 5 + posts per week = 80 - 100 %· All the posts and responses should include exceptional thought and application of the material.
• Lateness- Work that is submitted late will not be accepted.

Weekly Schedule

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

• In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
• Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
• Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

Academic Honesty:CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.

Missing and Late Work Policies

• Interacting with classmates is an essential part of the online discussions and cannot be made up after the due date. Late participation or contribution is not accepted in the discussion forum. If you miss two or more classes/participations in discussion forum, you will FAIL the course.

• Assignments, homework, quizzes, and exams are due by the deadline noted on the syllabus, even when you need to be absent. Late work is not accepted. After a week, it will no longer be accepted for credit.

• Plan and complete homework, assignment on time. Being absent or late is not an excuse for not completing any homework, assignment, class work, assigned for that week.

• Extensions or late work will be granted only in extenuating circumstances. If a lengthy medical problem or other emergent personal issue will result in missing weekly discussions and/or assignments. It will be considered by case to case basis.

• You are responsible for checking Canvas, for weekly announcements, syllabus, and weekly class schedule. Please reach out and ask questions if anything is unclear.
