The last day to use a Financial Aid Advance to purchase textbooks/books is the 3rd Tuesday of the semester. See your financial aid counselor at your academic center if you have any questions.

Methods

We will be using Pearson MyLab in this class for all homework assignments and Exams. It comes with access to e-book. You can either purchase it from the bookstore, or it is the cheapest when purchasing directly from the publisher. You will have an option to add a loose-leaf printed copy from the publisher.

Pearson MyLab will be integrated into our Canvas course.

Our class week goes from Tuesday to the following Monday night.

Materials for each week will be in a separate module on Canvas. Please read the chapters in your textbook. Please make sure you use all available tools on Pearson site, as necessary. I also have selected problems from your textbook that best represent the material we are learning and posted the problem numbers and solutions in the module for the week.

By Thursday night please respond to one of my discussion prompts There is a graded discussion item in each module. I will enter the discussion grades there. As you will see in the rubric, you can get 0-13 points for your initial post and 0-7 points for reply.

The homework assignments are due by Monday night when your discussion replies are also due. The grades for discussions will be entered according to the rubric. Homeworks will be automatically graded on Pearson and transferred into Canvas.

You are encouraged to contact me with any questions that you have. The best way to reach me is through the messages on Canvas.

Exam and homework due dates are all listed on Canvas modules, they are in your Canvas calendar, on the syllabus and also they are all on the Pearson site as soon as you log on.

Homework assignments and Exams are automatically graded on Pearson MyLab. Please, please contact me right away if you get “kicked out” of Pearson and are unable to complete something. I will reset your attempt as soon as I am able to. You are able to save your work and exit, but only after completing the problem that you are on. When you log in next time, you will not be able to continue or correct the problems and questions that were started in the previous log-in session. Ten best Homework grades will count towards your final grade.

Evaluation Criteria

Exam 2

20%

Exam 3

100%

The exams are not cumulative. Having said that – the material very much builds on understanding of the prior chapters.

You will have 12 weekly discussions plus Icebreaker. Ten best will count towards your final grade.

You will have 12 homework assignments. Ten best will count towards your final grade.

There is absolutely no extra credit in this class (so, please don’t ask). Please take the items that do determine your grade (e.g., exams, discussions and homework assignments) seriously and prepare for them in a careful and thoughtful manner.

You will need a great deal of self discipline for this class. All due dates are given in the syllabus, they will be enforced and you need to have the self discipline and time management skills to complete everything timely.

I cannot stress enough the importance of communication. If you feel lost in the course, if you have any questions, please let me know as early as possible. The best way to contact me is through messages on Canvas. While you are not being tested on the first chapters repeatedly, if you have not understood the basic terms, you will feel more and more lost.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and participation in classes are essential for success in and are completion requirements for courses at CCV. A student's failure to meet attendance requirements as specified in course descriptions will normally result in a non-satisfactory grade.

  • In general, missing more than 20% of a course due to absences, lateness or early departures may jeopardize a student's ability to earn a satisfactory final grade.
  • Attending an on-ground or synchronous course means a student appeared in the live classroom for at least a meaningful portion of a given class meeting. Attending an online course means a student posted a discussion forum response, completed a quiz or attempted some other academically required activity. Simply viewing a course item or module does not count as attendance.
  • Meeting the minimum attendance requirement for a course does not mean a student has satisfied the academic requirements for participation, which require students to go above and beyond simply attending a portion of the class. Faculty members will individually determine what constitutes participation in each course they teach and explain in their course descriptions how participation factors into a student's final grade.

Participation Expectations

Meaningful participation is a part of your learning in this class and also a part of your grade. You are required to post to one discussion prompt answer a week by Thursday night and post a thoughtful reply/comment/question to a classmate’s post by the following Monday night.

- The initial posts need to be at least 300 words long and provide a detailed discussion of the prompt. Your discussion post must be written by you, copying from an external source will result in automatic zero.

- The replies need to address a specific aspect of a classmates post and explain why you agree/disagree with the answer or what other aspect of the problem at hand would you consider and why. Please have your responses at least 75 words long.

- You need to have read the chapter to post. While that is discussion from which we all learn and I do not expect you to have everything perfect, I do expect you to talk about topics in the chapter we are discussing.

Each week’s participation will be graded on a 20 point scale – 13 possible points for initial post and 7 possible points for the reply. I will drop two lowest (or missed) participation grades. No late participation will be graded.

Missing & Late Work Policy

At times life happens and it simply isn't possible to meet the course deadlines. Missing a homework or discussion is sometimes necessary, but can be problematic. It is built in this course that you can miss two homeworks and three discussions without it affecting your grade negatively, but the material builds on the prior chapters so it is very important for you to keep up.

If you know of upcoming commitments that will interfere with your ability to submit the work timely, please know that this class is set up so that you are able to plan and submit many (but not all) things earlier as well. Please contact me if any alternative arrangements are necessary and we will try to work with it. Homework assignments will be all available to work ahead. All exams will be available two weeks before the due date. The discussion posts will all be available, but obviously you cannot post a thoughtful reply to a classmate’s post in advance.

Late homework assignments will be accepted for 3 days after the due date with 40% penalty. After 4 days the grade for that homework will be zero.

Exams will be accepted for 3 days after due date with 30% penalty, after that there is a zero grade for it. The exams will be available 14 days before the due date so you do have 2 full weeks to work on them. I have also broken up the exams into multiple parts, so you do not have to complete the entire exam in one sitting.

If there are extenuating/emergency situations, please contact me at the earliest possible time to make arrangements for alternate deadlines/time for submission.

Accessibility Services for Students with Disabilities:

CCV strives to mitigate barriers to course access for students with documented disabilities. To request accommodations, please
  1. Provide disability documentation to the Accessibility Coordinator at your academic center. https://ccv.edu/discover-resources/students-with-disabilities/
  2. Request an appointment to meet with accessibility coordinator to discuss your request and create an accommodation plan.
  3. Once created, students will share the accommodation plan with faculty. Please note, faculty cannot make disability accommodations outside of this process.

Academic Integrity

CCV has a commitment to honesty and excellence in academic work and expects the same from all students. Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can occur whenever you present -as your own work- something that you did not do. You can also be guilty of cheating if you help someone else cheat. Being unaware of what constitutes academic dishonesty (such as knowing what plagiarism is) does not absolve a student of the responsibility to be honest in his/her academic work. Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously and may lead to dismissal from the College.
